Re: Important Immigration Update and Ongoing Support for our International Community
The global diversity of our NYU community has long been a bedrock of NYU. Therefore, we understand the uncertainty that many of our international students and scholars are experiencing at this time.

As you have likely seen in recent media reports, federal immigration authorities have begun terminating the immigration status of some international students at colleges and universities across the country. NYU has become aware that some members of our own community are among those affected. Our Office of Global Services (OGS) has been in direct contact with all affected individuals, providing them with information and resources.

The University is continuing to monitor the situation closely. If we identify additional community members who have had their immigration status terminated, a member of the OGS team will reach out to them immediately. Please note that if you have not heard from OGS, it means the University is unaware of any changes to your immigration status.

Given privacy laws and policies, we cannot provide specific information about any of those affected.

We will provide in-person school-based drop-in hours for students, staff or faculty who would like to discuss questions related to this topic, including University resources, immigration, potential options for affected students regarding their academic progress, and wellness support for those who would find that helpful. These sessions will be convened by a Global Support Team, and include representatives from OGS, our counseling center, and each school; we have heard from faculty leaders that these are the experts who are essential to addressing concerns being raised in our international community. School Deans will send information about these sessions in the next 48 hours. Please stay alert to your email and for the subject line: Global Support Team for the time and place of these meetings.

For your immediate questions on:
– Visa-related topics for students: Email ogs@nyu.edu or call 212-998-4720.
– Visa-related topics for faculty/staff: Email ogs.scholars@nyu.edu or call 212-998-4240.
– Students who aren’t sure where to go for answers, help, or support, please contact the confidential Wellness Exchange Hotline or by emailing the Dean of Students Office at deanofstudents@nyu.edu
– Faculty, staff, and administrators can access support through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP); for immediate support, please call the EAP at 888-980-8740. You can also follow up with your deans offices or supervisors if you are in search of additional resources.

We also wanted to once again share these resources for members of our community:
Supporting our Global Community: Provides a wide range of information on immigration-related topics and issues.
Protocols and guidance related to engagement with law enforcement and government agencies.

We understand how challenging these times are for many members of our community. We will continue to provide updates as they become available and will provide supportive services as these needs come to our attention.

Please take care of yourselves, and of one another. We are a community and each of us will need to lean on each other during this time. Take advantage of your local support system and please contact the many resources we have provided—they are here to help.

Re: Important Considerations for International Travel During Spring Break and Federal Protocols

With Spring Break approaching, we know that some of you have concerns about whether or not you should be contemplating international travel right now. Last week, we were in direct contact with students and scholars from countries which, according to media reports, may be affected by new travel restrictions, and recommended that they avoid any non-essential travel until details of any new restrictions are announced. At this time, while we are not extending that same guidance to our entire international community, we would suggest that if you are uneasy or have some hesitancy about international travel right now, you consider remaining in the United States during the break out of an abundance of caution.

We have no indication as to whether the new travel restrictions will apply to F and J students and scholars, and/or to current visa holders.

For those international students who are currently studying outside of the United States—i.e., at an NYU academic center or global campus, or via an exchange program: regardless of your nationality, we recommend that you remain where you are, which is a requirement of your student visa.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact us (ogs@nyu.edu) if you have any questions or concerns. If you do decide to travel, please be mindful of the following:

  • Review our travel information on the documents required for international travel.
  • Be prepared for additional questioning at ports of entry. Officers may ask about your travel history, immigration status, and reasons for returning to the US.
  • Monitor government announcements before making travel plans, as policies may change with little notice. Updates are posted to our Supporting Our Global Community web page.
  • If any travel restrictions are implemented while you are out of the country, and you have any time-sensitive questions or concerns, please contact Campus Safety at 212-998-2222.

We would also like to remind you of NYU’s policies and protocols regarding federal law enforcement. For those who are in need of support or have specific questions, we’re here to help. Please contact the Office of Work Life (for employees), the Office of the Dean of Students (for students), or the Office of Global Services (if you have specific questions or concerns about your visa).
