HAL- humanoid audio lens

Andrew Sahlstrom

The Humanoid Audio Lens is a silicone rubber throat which can articulate sound much like a human.

http://www.abstract-assembly.com/?p=798

Description

HAL (Humanoid Audio Lens) is a project inspired by how a resonator box functions. When sound passes through a resonator box it becomes naturally amplified. The size and shape of the box is important to produce different harmonic outputs. HAL is a resonator box made of silicone rubber and can change size and shape, and even produce vowel and consanant sounds.

3D Image Exploring

Joakim G Quach

Exploring images through interactive 3D manipulation.

http://www.joakimquach.com/blog/spring-2016/the-world-pixel-by-pixel/3d-image-exploring

Description

This project is an exploration of how we can reveal and play with images, using depth from the physical world. Each image is layered in different depths, and are revealed only at that depth. The images are shown through projecting on 3D cubes, which move in space based on input from the Kinect.

Replicating Nature

Adi Wiedersheim Sendagorta, Francesca Rodriguez Sawaya, Kevin Stirnweis

A series of digital flowers will grow in flower pots arranged on a shelf, receding and breaking down in the presence of humans.

https://vimeo.com/164937075

Description

As we strive to replicate the real world with larger screens and better graphics, we ironically destroy the natural world we attempt to imitate. Our project confronts the individual with an intended replication of nature but as the viewer gets closer this replication disintegrates, leaving the viewer thinking about how our desire to reproduce nature actively aids in its destruction.

Replicating Nature is comprised of six flower pots featuring unique projections resting on two shelves. Proximity sensors are installed so that when someone approaches these projections of flowers, they begin to “glitch” as they then disappear.

50 Shades of Eyes

Yuli Cai

50 shades of eyes is a projection installation that reveals secrets behind sunglasses.

Description

People usually do what they don't usually do when we are behind a pair of sunglasses. Peaking towards others, secretly looking around, staring at someone. All of the subtle inner game are expressed unawarely. Using Kinect to sense the users, including the movements of the viewers, the number of viewers. What if there is no one in the scene, what if there is a lot of people in front of you? What are the relationship between eyes expression and the surrounding people?

Still Vibration

Ella Dagan

Empowering paraplegic women with fashion statement vibrating pants

http://www.ella-dagan.com/know-pressure-vibration-motors-are-in/

Description

Still Vibration is a project designed to empower, engage and delight paraplegic women in the form of a carefully crafted pants. The pants designed to meet many unique requirements the sitting figure has in terms of the pattern construction, needs and materials. Inspired by athletic wear and the Space Age aesthetic the pants are cool and make a fashion statement.

Paraplegic people are at risk of developing bedsores (pressure ulcers) which once form, become a chronic source of pain, suffering, and in some cases can lead to life-threatening complications. The pants design incorporates removable 2×5 sets of soft vibrations buttons on each thigh to promote skin blood flow and engagement with the legs. By doing so it serves as a reminder to shift one’s weight every 15 to 20 minutes in the wheelchair, a common recommendation for preventative measures to avoid the formation of bedsores. Furthermore, the vibration buttons are entertaining and playful.

trash/talk

Dana Abrassart, Jamie Charry

The trash can that talks back, reexamining our relationship with waste.

http://www.blondishmoment.com/2016/04/19/tempx-times-two/

Description

trash/talk is a trash can that talks back. In doing so, it attempts to bring awareness to the usually mindless act of throwing waste away.

Fairly mundane looking from the outside, trash/talk then catches the unwitting off guard by displaying images of the ultimate demise of trash in NYC.

Finally, trash/talk offers an alternative to wasteful products.

***NB. We may try to amend the project before the show to change the output, but the idea and technical are working beautifully.

Nikita Huggins

A tribute to the musical genius of A Tribe Called Quest

http://www.nikitahuggins.com/video-readymade-atcq/

Description

This is a museum exhibit that provides a forum to reminisce over ATCQ's music. The group is regarded as pioneers in alternative hip-hop music and produced music that is both intelligent and artistic. This exhibit is a tribute to the group and late member, Phife Dawg.

It allows you to take a walk down memory lane, to listen to Tribe’s hits and get the opportunity to interact with the music. Back in the 90’s vinyl records were used in the music industry. Since the group’s music is indeed a throw back to the 90’s, by using vinyl records, the user will get the opportunity to play songs and view the associated music video as music videos were also prevalent back in the 90’s. The audio and video are meant to take the user back to another time when there was good vibes in hip-hop music. To recall their references to this music – where they were and what they music means to them.

The interface: There are two vinyl turntables and a mixer. The user picks two records from a crate and places them one each on a turntable. They start the records and the music and videos start playing. The video is projected and mapped to a framed vinyl record on the wall in front of the user. Enabling them to both listen to the song and view the associated videos. Through the turntable interface, the user will have the opportunity to manipulate the audio and video – just like a DJ does.
