Multi-direction kinetic chandler that changes light pattern based on the ambient light

https://

Description

This project is to focus on the shadows created by single direction light sources. Using servos to control fins, it will change the shape and focus in 4-directions. It will be hanging on the ceiling and creates a unique lighting environment based on the pre-existing light of the room. It is meant to provide adequate functional light. Each light has independent control and can be programmed to function differently. It is a combination of skills learned from classes this semester. Progress is under construction for Light final due on Wednesday 5/8.

Invisible Labor

Isabella Vento, Sukanya Aneja

http://static.playdo.io/invisible-labor-2.mp4

Description

This project sheds light on the invisible labor powering much of our digital comforts — from platforms like Mechanical Turk, to outsourced content moderation work. This work is essential for “technological progress”, but is kept behind curtains, and unknown to the average “user”.

A video plays on the headset — recordings from Mechanical Turks, responding to interview questions (paid according to NY minimum wage standards, as opposed to the $0.01 – $0.15 standard on MTurk). But in order to view and hear the video clearly, someone else must get down on the floor and turn the crank. The participants' physical positions amplify the social structures and power dynamics at play.

A dress that reveals the wearers emotions when being paid attention by emitting a varying ringing sound.

https://wp.nyu.edu/iditbarak/2019/03/22/wearables-3/

Description

This wearable project was Inspired by Victor&Rolf's “Bell Collection” fall 2000, This project set out to achieve the same effect their dress had on a body in motion, in a setting where there was no body to activate the bells.

Furthermore this dress aims to examine the relationship between

wearer – garment – gazer. How can a garment relay information about a wearers emotional state through sound even if their body is completely still.

The dress is a Chiffon evening dress with 250 jingle bells that are being vibrated using 8 motors activated by a heart shaped touch sensor.

Programed with different vibration patterns depending on the duration of activation of the sensor.

The different vibration pattern symbolize the range of emotions an individual might experience when receiving different amounts of attention. When does exciting flattery become uncomfortable?

Fu Ping

Haiyi Huang, Woan-Chin LIN

A video installation that portrays the absence of the sense of belonging.

https://vimeo.com/334330143

Description

This installation is a digital portrayal of the artists and their continuous search for their sense of belonging. Both artists left their home country at a very young age, and the experience of constantly moving to a new city has led them to accustom to the feeling of not deeply rooted in any particular place. In this installation, the artists and the cities they have lived in are projected on the two leaves floating on the surface of the moving water. It uses the metaphor of “fu ping” (the mandarin for duckweeds), which are plants floating on the surface of still or slow-moving bodies of fresh water, as a symbol for the artists’ rootless feelings.

The concept of the installation originated from the artists’ personal experience. Having to acclimate to different environments and cultures in their early stage of life, the artists have constantly taken on new identities and are constantly looking for a place where they feel they belong. The hustling bustling videos of the cities in which the artists have lived are projected in the shape of their bodies, contrasting their projected lackadaisical movements on the leaves, to emphasize on their helplessness of the swift shifting of their environment. The floating leaves on the moving water are a symbol for “fu ping” (the mandarin for duckweeds), which the artists use as a metaphor for their sense of rootlessness.

Shadow Through Time

A study on shadows through time in the format of a 24-hour light fixture

https://hellonun.blog/2019/05/13/shadow-through-time/

Description

Although we are influenced by the light environment we experience everyday, we rarely take a close look at the nuances in those lighting moments.

Shadow through time is a 24-hour light fixture which highlights the change in shadow compositions through time.

The square shaped fixture contains four moving elastic bands lined up horizontally and four light sources in four corners. The light sources are mapped according to the direction of sunlight throughout the day. The elastic bands act as as a clock rotating 180 degrees in 12 hours and back.

A Vociferous Silence

Jiyao Zhang

“A Vociferous Silence” is a series of reactive masks that attempt to address the complexity of one’s self-concept and self-appraisal by presenting multiple aspects of inner voices.

https://

Description

Visitors are invited to put their faces into the masks and cover their ears. A voice is heard through bone conduction activated by physical touch. What the user hears creates the illusion of having a voice in their head. The narration reveals different aspects of my own self-image. Each mask focuses on one of the following aspects: negativity, positivity, and uncertainty. As our filters for Reality, how we see ourselves influence everything we do or say, everything we feel, or otherwise perceive. In a sense, one’s perception of others is a reflection of oneself. Thus, I see “A Vociferous Silence” as a VR piece as well but a different kind of virtual, where the experiencer is forced to become another person by wearing a new face and listen to a new self-image. I have two goals for this project. First, I want to discover the unknown me, with whom I barely communicate but am always influenced by: the hidden character behind the face in the mirror that thinks, dreams, talks, feels and believes. Second, I hope that other people who share similar experiences will come to know that they aren't alone, and, I hope that will be comforting.

Darkness

Manu Jain, Tanic Nakpresha

A Virtual Reality Experience where you have no sight, and have to find your way through space using just sound.

https://

Description

Manu and Tanic are creating a virtual reality experience where the user is not given the affordance of sight, and must find their way to their destination using just sound.

There are no visuals to rely upon, the experience for the user is completely dark. The piece begins by the user hearing sounds that they are on a subway. They must then focus upon the spatial and localized audio implemented to realize how to navigate the space off the train, onto a subway platform, call and take an elevator to street level, find a street corner, listen for cues for when it is safe to cross the street, and find their ultimate destination. There are specified sounds and directions that the user must hone in on to wayfind.

The virtual reality experience is being built in Unity and designed for the Oculus headset.
