Hear The Line – Augmented Reality Collective Story-Telling Experience

Description

It sounds like audio social media posts placed in a mirror world (augmented reality), it is also a new way of storytelling. It could be considered as a site specific experience, only in certain place and by certain moves could you perceive the few minutes experience created by the previous users, people can feel how the “sound” creator was going through in that minute at that specific place by moving the way he/she moved.

Superfície

Marcela Mancino von der Osten

Superfície is a live performance that discusses identity and memory through the materiality of a simultaneously physical and digital living human body.

https://mardefronteira.wordpress.com/category/music-interaction-design/

Description

CONCEPT: Superfície is a live performance that discusses identity and memory through the materiality of a simultaneously physical and digital living human body. Audiovisual textures that compose the performer's existence in space and time are triggered by her movements, leading the audience into an experience of scanning through her skin. This work dialogues with the idea of a body that is somewhere between stage and the digital world, co-existing in these two spaces.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION: Superfície uses Kinect to gather data from the performer's movements, transforming them into sound, video and light. The sound is a movement translation, having a set of rules that trigger different instruments and effects (i.e. the distance between the left foot and the right hand dictate the reverb of a specific synthesizer). The main video output is an on-skin projector showing textures from the performer's body and memories, as well as manipulations of the image being gathered by the IR camera. All elements are being triggered and manipulated in the same way that the sound is.

Note: I am signing up for performing live. Also available for participating in production the event.
In case the live performance ends up not happening, I would like to somehow present documentation of this process, since ITP haven't given me the chance to perform it.

Description

A Measure of Care invites you to look for remarkable people in the Library of Congress' collections who did not receive obituaries in The New York Times until the launch of their Overlooked feature in 2018. The project also offers tools for people to add more representation of these people into archives, and others who are overlooked, into the Library of Congress' homepage with a chrome extension and the ability to contribute to the dataset behind the project.

Cats

Yuguang Zhang

“Cats” is a generative arts piece that explores the relationship between AI synthesized digital contents and human beings.

https://www.ygzhang.com/cats.html

Description

This piece is inspired by R. Luke Dubois's Pop Icon: Bowie piece, and the recent advancement in high-resolution AI image synthesis. While AI is now capable of producing images that look exactly like photos taken using a camera, it does not rely on any physicality of the subject of those imageries. In this case, what's the point of doing so? And what does it imply? In search of answers to this question, I found that it could be used as a platform to explore our “hive mind” perception of concepts, ideas, and bias, and to present them in realistically convincing or utterly surreal ways.

In this piece, I chose the combination of human portrait arts and real-life cat photos – two categories that wouldn't normally come across each other – as my subject of synthesis. 5000+ images of human portraits were trained on StyleGAN, with an additional layer of 1000+ cat faces. The results were then used to synthesize semi-human, semi-cat portraits and generate a piece of “cat” music modeled after Beethoven's Sonata No. 8.

This piece was performed at the Cycling '74 Expo on April, 2019, and its part of the my Hivemind series.

Conveyor

Hannah Tardie

This work is a networked pulley system about infrastructure, time, and what it means to take up space.

http://www.hannahtardie.com/conveyor

Description

This work is a networked pulley system about infrastructure and what it means to take up space. It uses custom hardware and is programmed according to the amount of time it will be installed. During its installation, it will complete 2 laps or cycles per day. Some laps will be done at a high speed in a matter of minutes, while others may take hours. This project was created based on an interest in erratic and uncontrollable temporalities. While the material of the project remains the same throughout its duration, its movement through space at specific times qualifies the material. In the same way, this project adds a temporality and infrastructure to the space it inhabits, creating a relationship to its position in space with ways of keeping time. While it can be thought of as a physical network, transmitting information from room to room, it can also be considered a meditation on what it means to occupy space. In one way, the piece takes up more space than any other project in the show, inhabiting multiple rooms. In another way, it takes up the least amount of space as it does not touch the floor, and is out of typical human field of view. Viewers must look up at the ceiling in order to perceive the work.
