Welcome to ITP! This is an important guide that will help you navigate course registration for the Fall 2021 semester.
Registration Appointment Time
Course registration in Albert for incoming ITP students will take place on Tuesday, August 10th at 10:00am ET.
Navigating Albert & Reviewing the ITP Classes
Albert is the University’s class registration system, which you will need to become familiar navigating for class registration.
ITP’s class offerings can be found via the Course Search link in your Shopping Cart on the home page of your Albert Student Center, under “Interactive Telecommunications (ITPG-GT).” Use the filters to view “Fall 2021” class sections.
You may add “closed,” “open,” or “wait list available” classes to the Shopping Cart – it is simply a holding center for classes you are interested in.
At the appointment time on Tuesday, August 10th and 10:00am ET, students will be able to “check out” or enroll in some, or all, of the classes in their Shopping Cart.
Essential Albert Functions
- Validate Classes (Plan)
- Add Classes (Enroll)
- Join Open Waiting Lists (Wait List) – If a class is closed, and has an opening on the waiting list, students may wait list a class.
- Drop Classes
- Swap Classes – Drop and Enroll at the same time.
- Edit Swap Classes – A conditional drop of an enrolled class, to make space for a waitlisted course (only will become activated if the waitlisted course becomes available). This is only available if you are on an active waiting list.
Albert Rules & Restrictions
- Students may enroll in a maximum of 18.0 units per semester.
- Wait listed classes do not credit toward the 18.0 unit term unit limit – only enrolled classes count toward the limit.
- Students may not enroll in 2 courses that have a time-conflict.
Waiting Lists, Auto-Enrollment, & Edit Swap
- Waiting lists are managed automatically by Albert – as enrolled students / students in front of you on the waiting list drop, Albert moves you closer to position 1. When you are in position 1 on a waiting list and an opening in the class occurs, Albert will auto-enroll you in the class.
- In order for Albert to auto-enroll you in the class, you cannot have another enrolled course with a time-conflict, and you must have sufficient space for the course to post within your 18.0 unit term limit.
- If you have a waitlisted class with a time-conflict with an enrolled class, or have too many enrolled units on your schedule for the waitlisted course to post within the 18.0 unit limit, you must resolve these issues using the Edit Swap.
- If you do not have an Edit Swap on a waitlisted class, and there is an issue blocking auto-enrollment, Albert will keep you waitlisted in position 1 and move the student behind you on the waiting list to fill the vacancy.
- This is why it is important to review your schedule when you have waitlisted for a class to be sure that any waitlisted classes can auto-enroll to your schedule successfully.
Tuition and Fee Rates
ITP is a full-time program, which requires a full-time registration of 12.0 – 18.0 units. For tuition and fee rates, please see here.
Term Deadlines, Add/Drop Period, and Schedule Adjustments After Add/Drop
All important term deadlines, including the last day of the add/drop period, lives on this page on Help.
The add/drop period is the time during which students may adjust their class schedules freely, without penalty. The add/drop period for Fa21 runs through the 2nd week of classes (09/15/21) at midnight ET.
At the close of the add/drop period, all class waiting lists are purged from Albert, and enrollment is frozen for the semester (this includes classes that meet later on in the semester).
If you need to request a withdrawal after this deadline, you will receive a W mark on your transcript which signifies a late class withdrawal. If you need to adjust your schedule after the add/drop period closes, please contact Dante directly via email at dpd266@nyu.edu for assistance.
ITP Tier 1 Foundation Courses
A large majority of your class schedules will be comprised of the ITP Tier 1 Foundation Courses, which are the essential building blocks for the rest of your academic program at ITP. They are:
- ITPG-GT 2004 – Comm. Lab: Hypercinema (4.0 units)
- ITPG-GT 2005 – Comm. Lab: Visual Language (2.0 units)
- ITPG-GT 2233 – Intro. to Computational Media (4.0 units)
- for those students with basic coding background, you may elect to take the 2.0 unit / 2nd-half only version of ICM below:
- ITPG-GT 2048 – Intro. to Computational Media: Media (2.0 units)
- ITPG-GT 2301 – Intro. to Physical Computing (4.0 units)
- ITPG-GT 2000 – Applications (4.0 units)
- This is a mandatory course, and all students will be pre-registered in this prior to the registration appointment time. It may not be dropped.
While individual sections may close out in Albert, we guarantee enrollment in any ITP Tier 1 Foundation Courses you need to take. If you cannot find a section to join in Albert, simply fill out this ITP Tier 1 Registration Issues Form, and we will find a section that works with your schedule.
ITP Tier 2 Elective Courses & Registering Outside of ITP
In addition to your Tier 1 Foundation courses, you may elect to register for Tier 2 Elective courses in ITP, or begin to explore courses outside of the department. You are free to register for classes outside of ITP, given that they are related to your course of study in the program. The only restriction is that the courses must be at the graduate-level (we cannot credit undergraduate coursework toward the M.P.S. degree, under any circumstances).
Each academic department at NYU manages the registration of outside NYU students differently. Some may not open to non-majors, others may require paperwork, so in-general, it is a good idea to 1.) review the Class Notes in Albert for any instructions for non-majors and 2.) contact someone on the administrative staff in the department you’re interested in, to ask how non-major registration works in their department.
To help students, I’ve set up a guide here with registration instructions and contact information for various NYU departments. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but should help you in your search.
