Butterfly Dream

“Am I dreaming of the butterfly, or the butterfly is dreaming of me?”

Qianyi Chen

https://vimeo.com/418304977

Description

Inspired by the story of the butterfly dream written by Zhuangzi, this project aims to illustrate the mind flow of different layers of the dream. From the surface of the dream to the subconsciousness, the audience will go deeper and deeper. With the boundary of virtual and reality being questioned, people are led to Zhuangzi’ inquiry from thousands of years ago – Am I dreaming of the butterfly, or the butterfly is dreaming of me?

The Lost Forest

A virtual soundscape that provides immersive spooky experience.

Yuchen Wang

https://s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com/ima.nyu.edu/commlab/moon/barry-wang/index.html

Description

In this project, I would like to create an imaginary space of a forest that sunk underneath a lake. The idea come from a game series called Rusty Lake. When I was playing that game, the horrifying feeling it brings generates great excitement to me. I aim to create such a forest so as to construct a spooky and horrifying space. This forest under the lake is set to be a place to empty one's mind and escape from reality. The purpose is to bring the users an immersive experience of mental stimulation, and also a of place for meditation and self-reflection, though in a bizarre way. In this project, multiple sound objects are applied, including some recorded sound, including some real forest and underwater sound. Besides artificial ones are also applied. The goal is to make this soundscape easily acceptable by the audience, while inspiring their imagination to think beyond the soundscape itself and come up with his or her on story that may happen behind it. To make the whole project more completed and more surprising, I added a loop when the users finish their first round. It makes the story much spookier, as if this is a haunted forest that one can never leave.

The Inside World of a Smoker

This is a tiny story originated from an ordinary life, unfolding as a stream of consciousness

Yuntong Dai

https://s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com/ima.nyu.edu/commlab/moon/hazel-dai/index.html

Description

This is a documentary project from the communications lab. It is very mini, and the users can explore the webpage with easy interactions. The main concept is to know about a smoker's life-story, anxiety, and childhood. The mini-documentary is shot with iPhone 11 pro, and the style is diverse but uniformed meanwhile. You can see some elements from the old-fashioned silent movie and even some messy hand-writings! However, the main point here is not trying to tell a wholesome story. Instead, the story is unfolded as a stream of consciousness. Just imagine you've entered the smoker's brain, and explore a tiny part of his complicated yet typical life. Moreover, the concept of “mood” is there, all the way through the whole project. The interactive way may be a bit simple, but please enjoy the videos as well!

Particle God

By using kinect, you can use your magic to play with the particle system.

Description

Since we've learned various particle systems and many different particle movements throughout the whole semester, I decided to make a project that can let the user experience different particle effects at the same time. I use Kinect to detect the user's hand and there are some interactions with the particle system based on the hand state of the user. For example, if the user closes his or her hands, the particles would start to follow the position of the hands. Anyway, it's a really fun project to play with.

Description

This project is inspired by the ATOM text editor's icon. By using gravitational force in p5.js, I create an atom structure layer by layer, core to electron, electron to the general sphere of an atom. By adding clicking interaction, audience can build up an atom structure layer by layer.

Lost in Dimension

A p5.js visual project utilizing WEBGL

Haoquan Wang

https://youtu.be/T9uPobUEpP8

Description

This is a visual project inspired by teamLab light show and movie Interstellar. Light, in my mind, always represents hope and life. In this special time, people cannot go out to see that fantastic art show. Some of the people even feel desperate and sad in quarantine life. Hence, I wish to use p5.js to bring this amazing light performance nto the digital world, bring hope and happiness to my audience. This project is supposed to be available in multiple media, like VR/AR, mobile devices, and PC. Currently, I mostly work on the laptop. Inspired by Interstellar, I combine light performance with 3d spaces, allowing users to explore 3d space and travel around in the multi-dimensional digital world. Besides light, I also add 3d spheres and 2d rotating triangle into space. By moving around, it will be interesting to feel the encounter of 2d graphs, 3d graphs, and space.

Water Forms

It displays several forms of the water in a sketch.

Joseph Yang

https://vimeo.com/418785519

Description

I used P5 to imitate different forms of water, like snow(snowflakes), rain, river, ice. And the user could change the temperature of the system and the water form would change based on that temperature. It's more likely to be an educative project to tell some little children the changes of the water forms in nature rather than a project that you can just interact with the water.

華韵(Melody of Vines and Flowers)

A sound visualizer inspired from flowers and vines.

Zhuochen Yuan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrkMZXtbKxE&feature=emb_title

Description

Project 華韵 aims to associate the animation presenting the growth of vines and flowers(red spyder lily) with input music. The idea is that to use music to create the animation of nature, and I love the artistic expression of flowers with vines so I decide to make the animation based on this concept. The project mainly involves the implementation of OOP to make vines with stings and flowers on it, and the synchornization between music and animation is realized by implementing p5.sound.js to analyze the music and get parameters from it to feed into animation. I develope an easy beat detection based on volume, and each time a beat is detected will generate a flower, and its size is based on the volume of that beat. Also the reason why there are five vines growing at the same time is because each one represents a range of frequency and the energy of different sound frequency will influence the opacity and the thickness of the corresponding vine.

Alice In Wonderland

An interactive story of Alice in Wonderland that brings your naïveté and curiosity back.

Hanyu Zhao

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtXzNgcTHJ0&feature=youtu.be

Description

The project I picked is adapted from the famous novel Alice In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Although it’s a novel repeatedly recomposed by many writers or movie makers, I want to use the web browser to create an interactive experience for others to take part in Alice’s choices and really get to know how simple, erudite, and full of imagination Alice is. I believe Alice In Wonderland is not just a fairytale or merely a book for children. Russell once quotes it many times to illustrate profound philosophical questions. Though being adults, we shouldn’t lose our initial curiosity about the world. This is what I try to convey by incorporating users’ choices in Alice’s own story. Therefore, I’m going to create various options for different scenarios, most of which unexpected or need users to jump out of the box to get the correct answer. The two central themes that I want to convey through creating a fairy-tale-like atmosphere is: dream and reality have no black-and-white boundary; never forget where we started and always remember to be curious and innocent.

Ruins of Node 8

A unique sound experience in a city after destruction

Chaoyi Wang

https://s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com/ima.nyu.edu/commlab/moon/chaoyi-wang/index.html

Description

*Notes: When viewing the webpage, click on “reset” a few times before you click on anything else*

First of all, this is a web-based soundscape.

This project was inspired by the rhythm game Cytus II, and the images came from this game as well. The story of the game happens in a future cyberpunk world where music is a common interest of all human. Node 8 is the name of a city in the game. My goal is to create a soundscape of someone (the user) visiting a house in the city ruins. The user can click on objects in the house to hear sounds and how the sounds interact with the environment. The overall experience should be poetic. However, by looking for an easter egg in the project, you might be able to understand the story behind.

All the sounds and background music are from Adobe sample pack or recorded by me. Another piece of music in the project is “Used to be” composed by KIVA. All of these sounds and music have been through postproduction. For the background music, I put together four ambient music pieces and several glitchy electronic sounds from Adobe sample pack. I also added filters on “Used to be” to make it sound a little distorted. As for the rest of the sounds, a little reverb would do the job.
