IMA Courses

The IMA New York Spring 2025 course list is available on IMA Course Listings.

Registration in Albert begins November 18th (view and add to your calendar). Please log into Albert to see your individual registration appointment time. You can see class-specific dates and other important term deadlines for this semester on this page.

IMA majors have priority registration for IMA courses although these courses will open to other NYU students 1 week after registration begins. Please do not delay in registering and if you have issues with registering in Albert, please contact us.

Department consent holds for IMA courses will be cleared by the official registration date.

Courses Outside of IMA

For courses outside of IMA that may count towards required IMA electives or Liberal Arts electives, please see the IMA Interchange. To check on the course categories, please review the info on this page: New Allocations.

The Interchange lists courses from many programs throughout the University, including Tisch’s Game Design, Tandon’s IDM, Tisch’s Open Arts, Steinhardt’s MCC, CAS’s Computer Science, Steinhardt’s Studio Art. Each department has its own procedures for registering so if there is a question, please contact the individual department for registration instructions.

When using the Interchange, please be sure you are looking at classes that are offered in Spring 2025. Classes will all be listed with that category and further organized by the IMA category that they fulfill. The Featured page lists courses that may be of particular interest to IMA students.

Important Note:

IMA students cannot take SPS courses for credit.

ITP Courses

IMA Juniors and Seniors may register directly in Albert for ITP courses. These will be available for registration after ITP registration. You can find more info on the ITP Non-Major Registration Page. Please do not count on any particular ITP course being open and fill out your schedule with alternate classes in advance of this.

IMA Faculty Mentors & IMA Advisement

You have each been assigned a “Faculty Mentor” and this is a full time faculty member whom you should to meet with. They are assigned to you to talk through your overall plans, trajectory, career path, IMA course recommendations, and interests. They do not handle the technical advising processes in Albert or tracking course allocations.

Our IMA-Advise team is here to help you answer more academic or technical questions, such as “will this class count for this category,” “I’m having problems with Albert,” “is my DPR correct,” “am I on track with my courses and credits,” or “I need to transfer in credits.” For administrative or academic advising questions, please email ima-advise@itp.nyu.edu or you can schedule a meeting with us through NYU Connect.

Transfer Student Advising

We will share your individual advising “spreadsheet” with you that includes all of the classes you have taken so far and which requirement they fulfill. You can email or setting an appointment with IMA-Advise to discuss.

IMA Degree Progress Reports

You can check your Degree Progress Report through Albert.

IMA-Advise will also share your individual advising “spreadsheet” with you that includes all of the classes you have taken so far and which requirement they fulfill. You can email or setting an appointment with IMA-Advise to discuss.

Important NOTE:

You should receive your updated advising spreadsheets by October 25th.

AP, IB, & Advanced Standing Credits

We do not apply AP, IB, or Advanced Standing credits automatically.  You have to ask to have them applied to your transcript.

You can begin the process of transferring your credits once you are a Sophomore (or have completed your 1st year). There are a variety of reasons for this mostly relating to Visas, Financial Aid, and Graduation timing. Please contact us to discuss.

Important NOTE:

Many of these courses count for various requirements. Please make sure you are not taking a repetitive class because you cannot get credit for an AP, IB or Advanced Standing credit or the class equivalent if you take the credits at NYU. You can transfer a max of 32 credits and only 8 credits will count towards Liberal Arts Elective credits.

Policies & Procedures

The Tisch bulletin is a publication of Tisch’s Office of Student Affairs. Student Affairs is also here to help you with almost any concern while in our program. Please familiarize you with Tisch School of the Arts’ policies and procedures.

Much of the information contained here will affect you on an ongoing basis – matters, such as academic standards, grading policies, registration regulations, degree requirements, etc. We expect you to become conversant with these policies and procedures that you will need as a NYU/IMA student.

A detailed breakdown of the services offered by Student Affairs is included in the bulletin, as well as a detailed listing of Tisch administrators. In addition, you can learn more about Tisch and individual Tisch departments.
