ITP Camp Blog
One more day before the Show All Things Show!
Written by Gabriel Brasil on June 25, 2018, 10:16pm
We had a pretty chill morning in terms of sessions. Maybe everybody wanted some time to rest and/or to finish their projects? Or maybe they were out enjoying that beautiful sunshine...
It is never too late to get acquainted with Adobe Premiere - for that awesome professional looking project documentation. Thank’s Tre\'mar Baptiste for some Premiere 101.
In the afternoon, Tactile Pixel Art us take a break from all of that show prep to spend some time learning to cross stitch with Samantha.
Machine Learning is high on campers interest, thanks a lot to the amazing images it generates. But “What’s Possible These and more were answered on Ann’s session.
While Anthony and Roland loved camp so much they became counselors, in After ITP Camp they share all they want want you to know for the life after.
In this second visit to Fashion Pollution Solutions, Eric had us dig deeper into the problems plaguing our world of big industry fashion.
There’s always a new programming language to learn and camp is the best opportunity to get your feet wet on Functional programming with SCALA.
So the last day of camp before the bit SHOW ALL THINGS SHOW ends with busy bodies running, making and tinkering away last minute preparations.
Pride Sunday!!
Written by Roland on June 24, 2018, 9:54pm
To start us off Gabriel set off the alarm getting in! WhOOps!! It’s okay though we got it sorted out just in time for Jane’s 3D from 2D: Intro to Pressfitting and Laser-Cutting Fabrication Tips, where she taught us how to take our 2D laser cuts and snap them into 3D objects. Now I’m ready for the next challenge: turning my 3D prints into 4D.
Then Adam got us to work on our communication skills with So now what? How to communicate and sell your big idea. Awesome, now we just need THAT big idea. It’s out there somewhere. We will find it. One day.
A good distraction from searching for that big idea is playing with electricity and lights. Lots of lights. CHiKA led us on a massive 5 hour exploration of LED object creation in Get Leddy?. Result: We made awesome pulsating LED-sculpture pieces that looked somehow right between TRON, zen-temple and spaceships.
And the magic continued: Allison invited us to Sunday Tarot: Collaborative storytelling with oracle decks. Insights, insights, insights into the future and the past and everything in between and above. Deep.
All of a sudden someone brought rambutans!! And free pizza appeared. And disappeared again within seconds. That's camp. And I’m not supposed to tell you about it because it is SECRET but Josh took us out and about to visit the important places of Basquiat’s life in Secret Basquiat Field Trip. But don’t tell him I told you. And no pictures. Because it is secret. We took a random picture of counselor Alden looking into an empty chips-bag instead - which happened at approximately the same time over at camp. Just a coincidence?!? I am sure there is a connection between both events. Ask Alden.
We finished off with a so so necessary intro and guidance into the wild, fragmented and beautiful world of . openFrameworks!!! with Michael. Finally we can find our ways around this amazing tool. What a Sunday here at camp. All the magic. Here. Two days to go until the show - we can’t wait!
Saturday Night Fever
Written by Anthony Bui on June 24, 2018, 12:21am
We're inching closer and closer to the end of camp. Our last Saturday starts off with droopy, hungover eyes. Perhaps it's the afterglow of a fantastic Friday night out at Fat Cats?! But what happened yesterday is long past. Yesterday's mischief is quickly erased by today's excitement, full of inspiring sessions and preparations for the SHOW ALL THINGS SHOW!!!
ACCESS + ABILITY @ The Cooper Hewitt
Counselor Kar starts the morning off with enthusiasm. She invites us on a tour of Cooper Hewitt Design Museum! So much beautiful assistive technology on display.
Controlling Real Lightbulbs with Arduino
Yeseul illuminates our world, showing us a lot about about use and art with light bulbs in various environments.
And Yeseul said: "LET THERE BE LIGHT!" And there was light.
The Human Uprising: Overpopulation, overconsumption, and similar topics that are uncomfortable to discuss
Next, Josh Michaels leads us on an engaging conversation on difficult topics.
Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague, and we are the cure.
RunwayML: Machine learning for everyone
Cristobal Valenzuela drops by and helps us get really hands on with machine learning. He shows us RunwayML, a desktop application to run and use state of the art machine learning models and connect them to other software.
Time Series Data Workshop
Noah Crowley reminds us that time series data is ubiquitous -- it appears everywhere we measure change.
Effy's heart over time
Build a pair of VR Glasses - DIY tech for all
Julia Moura & Elisa Tan really get us excited with creating functioning VR goggles using plastic bottles and balloons! They share their background and make us think deeply about the challenges of tech education in developing countries.
Make your UX interface interactive! Intro to Sketch + Principle
Michelle Yao shares some UX. Together, we create some cool animation systems and mobile ready prototypes.
Augment Yourself
Counselor Terrick ends the night in digital. He shows campers how to create AR projects on their own.
BWONG!!! Terrick-ception
And last, but not least...
Roland joins the last five minutes of the World Cup viewing party and magically wills a goal for Germany. Party Parrot thanks you.
BW-BW-BW-BW-BWAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Wednesday Midweek Camp Extravaganza
Written by Gabriel Brasil on June 20, 2018, 9:47pm
Halfway through the week and still so much to learn!
Fabricating the Future: Makers in the Shared Economy Share all, share alike - Wendy gets us thinking about what it means to be makers in our expanding open source world. What are the repercussions around open source initiatives? What resources make these types of initiatives in accessible?
Arduino Crash Course WTF is the difference between analog and digital? Why don’t these buttons/LEDs/sensors work?? Arielle breaks it down for you in the Arduino Crash Course
Intro to Processing : Designing Brushes No paint required in this session! Matt Ortega brings out the digital artists in all of us with this intro to processing workshop.
Basics of Acoustics Do you love Dolly Parton? Know every word to Jolene? Today in Basics of Acoustics, we learned how you can use well structured songs to do sound design for live theater.
The Drawing Club Presents If digital paint brushes aren’t your jam, counselors Stevie and Terrick are back to get you flexing your more analog art muscles.
360 Without Anderson Cooper Can we be in the news without being the headline? Adrian pairs 360 cameras with VR headsets to figure that out.
Workshop on Heightening Emotional AI Chris played with our feelings in this demo of a patent pending emotional invention.
Local Net Adventure! Birds, birds….birds? Bird is the (pass)word when Alden sends campers under tables and into the stairwells with this local network scavenger hunt.
Metal 3D Printing to get to outer space Ever wonder if you could 3D parts to get to outer space? Luis’ session touched on the process of 3D printing metal and the end goals of the project.
Also, just a reminder campers: Don’t drink and drill. We like you all safe and sound
Best Tuesday!
Written by Chelsea Chen on June 20, 2018, 11:14am
Good Morning! Another great day at camp, with a lot of outdoor and active sessions today, taking advantage of the great weather to get our bodies moving. A lot of talk of pool noodles among the campers today, has anyone been checking on them?
We start with yoga again with Gail’s now classic Kundalini Yoga Brain Break to get us up and limber.
Then Arantxa got campers off the itp floor and out into the world with The Digital Public Space and got our minds going with a discussion of the quasi private public space of the internet.
Casey got us engaged with developing new camp community rituals in Ritual Design Lab. What kinds of new rituals should we adopt? I’m thinking “pool noodle fights†🤔.
Jina got us falling in love with photoshop all over again with You Don’t Know Your Face Yet 2. I immediately edited all pictures of me to look like pool noodles. Sorry if you don’t get the joke, it’s a camp insider thing.
No mixed signals here! Only good vibes happening in Kate’s Haptic Feedback, where we learned how to make sure our interactions are giving us the feedback we don’t even know we crave.
Brett got us off the ITP floor again with Walk on the Wild Side - American Museum of Natural History Outing. Now that I think of it I haven’t seen any of the campers who left on the field trip since they left… we might be dealing with a Night at the Museum situation here.
Thea is just the best at getting us to move our bodies around and have fun, today her Movement play: playful patterns for mobility had us rolling around, hopping, crawling, it was great.
We all want to be more sustainable in our practices and Daniel showed us a path to get there with Sustainable Crafting, Production and Consumption, and then Sonali & Yoshi showed us how to edit our videos with Video Workflow with Adobe Premiere Pro 101. Maybe one day we’ll have sustainable video editing, would we need solar panels for that?
Is the blockchain like a lego necklace? Well I sure thought it was before I took Leandra’s Intro to Ethereum Smart Contracts with Solidity. Now I know better 🤗
Then Greg shared some of his New Instruments For Musical Expression magic with Perform Some Music! Play Your One Minute Compositions!
Jonny shared some of his recent research and the work of some of his colleagues at the Recurse Center with Programmable Room Workshop w/ Recurse Alumni Jonathan Dahan. Apparently they have some kind of “smart†room there. Does that mean all other rooms are automatically dumb rooms?
Casey helped us end the day by getting us to break out of our shells in Play! Improv Games for Everyone, where we made sure to Yes, And our hearts out.
Magnificent Monday Microgreens & Machines
Written by Lindsey D. on June 19, 2018, 10:54am
The morning started off with Emiko walking us through the intricate process of creating capacitive sensors that can be used as tattoos (or tattoos than can be used as capacitive sensors?) in Workshop: Make your own metallic tattoo that can be used as a touch-capacitive sensor!. We could then hook them up to a Bluetooth Low Energy device and send MIDI notes directly from our skin!
We discussed with Nikita about the act of planting in the city in Size Doesn't Matter - Urban Farming Microgreens. She brought the ITP’s vertical gardening shelves, along with some seeds and dirt so that we could plant in our own bins. We hope to harvest next week!
Then in Beep, Boop Hello World | Python + APIs | Twitter Bot Go Josh got us making tweeting robots. Sounds kind of inappropriate if you ask me!
Then things got a little topsy turvy with Thea leading us on improving our balance in Handstands and Inversions. We got moving and stretching a bit before to get our bodies ready for the strains of upside-down life.
M.H. got us ready to make tiny movies done quick with One Minute Cinema: Project Videography. Next stop: Cannes 😎
Getting into the afternoon, Arielle led us in some deep discussion on the importance of documentation in our creative avenues in Let's Talk About Documentation.
The big one, Yining ran one of the most popular sessions of this year’s camp with ML5.js: A Friendly Introduction to Machine Learning. Maybe if I change my name to Machine Learning I’ll get all the fame and attention I’ve been needing 🤔
Lyel got us fired up and ready to put our technology to use in our political work in Resist! Intro to Tech and Political Activism.
Jonny got us on the blockchain working for good in Code For A Cause: A Multi-Session Hackathon For Social Impact Grants Featuring Decentralized Web Technology.
Rounding out the night and getting us to get groovy, Rudi-Renoir led us in Groove 101 - Learn about Groove and Improve your Projects.
Monday ended with a summer shower so we can restart Tuesday refreshed!
Sunny Sunday
Written by Alden Jones on June 17, 2018, 7:38pm
It was really super beautiful out today, a beautiful sunny day for a field trip! And some campers took advantage of this by following Casey on a Feld Trip to Central Park this morning.
Back at Tisch, Rina got us started with an awesome jewelry making session, Jewelry 101 - All that Glitters Isn’t Always Gold! From acrylic to paper, consider getting creative with some of the materials we have around the floor if you’re in need of some new accessories.
Pedro helped us get our computers to talk all over again Ok Robot Reboot! - Intro to Voice User Interfaces (Part 2). None of them turned into SkyNet... yet.
After a bit of lunch CHiKA then led us on a long (five hours!) deep dive into projection mapping with Map on Mask. Everyone better be an expert now 👼.
Oren threw some shade (sorry) today teaching us to make art with our graphics cards in Making Art With Your Graphics Card: Intro to Shaders.
Plastic might not seem like the most fun material but Ridwan showed us otherwise in Storytelling with Plastics.
Ever considered a cross country trip? How about on your bike? Andrew tells us about his adventures in How to ride your bicycle across America. Missed it? Check out his trip at myterribleidea.tumblr.com
Cedric set up the perfect class for those of us who think IoT can be pretty dumb, with Wireless & Tangible Interactive Media in the era of the Internet Of Shit!? (2nd edition). What better way to make things better than to start making it ourselves?
Getting into the evening hours, Nouf got us started on all kinds of 3D modeling tasks Zaha Hadid 101: 3D Modeling in Rhino and Grasshopper.
Katya then taught us how to make our projects green and lean with Eco & Budget-friendly, Free-form Enclosures from Paper Mush. Not only good for the planet but good for our portfolios too...
Terrick then put our bodies in the digital world in 3D Scan Yourself. Mysterious doppelgangers of campers then started appearing throughout the city...
Sunday's over but we've got another full week ahead of us, let's get at it!
ITP Camp World Cup Creativity Madness
Written by Roland on June 17, 2018, 3:30pm
Weekend! To be precise: it’s not just a weekend, it’s camp weekend III ! And Saturday was packed with … well, a little bit of everything: From Arduino hacking to coffee-brewing to ancestry-discovery to talking robots to 360 video, machine learning, comics, Max MSP, fabrics and photography. Not to forget some cutting-edge update on javascript and a bit of Soccer World Cup vibes. This is how we like to mix it at camp!
Let’s do a little recap: we started the morning with Enrique showing campers in Arduino+PD how to get the Arduino to make sounds: light sensor controlled sound generation madness!
Lots was happening for lunchtime today: We explored the frameworks of comics through discussion and examples with Shea in Experimental "Comics" and Comics-Making as a Way of Thinking. After that campers discussed methods of genetic information gathering, how the data that comes with DNA tests in and how to find relative through this data with Marilyn in Who Am We? | Genetic Genealogy in the 21st Century. In Ok Robot Reboot! - Intro to Voice User Interfaces we performed a Deep-dive into voice interfaces and AI with Pedro: campers were guided through history, privacy, use in real-life and design challenges & opportunities. Part 2 of the workshop will be tomorrow - then we will build voice interfaces on our own. At the same time something else was brewing in room 15: campers explored a wild variety of types of coffee, refined their barista-skills and sampled their own brew with Nicolas in Coffee 101 - What makes good coffee, good + Tasting.
The now high-caffeinated brains tackled a big challenge together with Josh: Machine Learning Without Computers! Campers explored the “mind†of a machine and how machine learning works with raisins (!), Carl Sagan and good conversations about hyper-dimensionality.
While some went deep into neural networks, other campers learned how to shoot using a 360 video and discussed good practices on editing and creating in Shooting 360 Video: Cinematic VR 101 with Michelle.
While some went 360 with video, other campers focused on performing with it in Oren’s Live Video Processing with Max/MSP/Jitter.
For those interested in the most cutting edge developments on the frontend, Roy had some great news in ES6: The JavaScript We've Waited Decades For. But what if you have the greatest projects and you forget about documentation? To prevent this from happening, MH showed campers how to use a camera the right way with his Show Don't Tell: Project Photography.
Off-Screen time, colors everywhere and lots of wet paint were taking over the shop in the later evening with Kate - we were Marbleizing on Fabric:
What a day! And we nearly forgot to mention our (in)-official ITP CAMP World Cup Corner that opened as well. Playtime! With so many different things happening today on the floor let’s get some rest for now and come back refreshed tomorrow!
Tejuino Friday
Written by Alden Jones on June 15, 2018, 8:31pm
Woof another full day, sessions running 10AM to 10PM. Gail continued her morning yoga series Kundalini Yoga Brain Break to get us up, present, and ready for another day.
And then the day picked up fast. Craig talked us through the world of projection mapping and madMapper with Augmenting the World with Light - Projection Mapping. Missed it? You can catch some of it here.
Quickly following up, Smita got us set with a hands on session introducing campers to Maya with My Oh Maya.
Projection returns in the afternoon as Arantxa tries to bring out the performer in all of us in Multiple Perspectives: Performance with projections.
Craig is back but this time leading Mastering the Pen Tool, diving into Adobe Illustrator with tips and tricks for the Pen Tool. Brush up on your skills and play the Bezier Game here.
And we're not even out of the afternoon yet. Cheng and Paul followed up to their Wednesday open data workshop with Making Data Tangible Pt2, John ran the second class of his unity workshop, Unity3D for non Gamers **, and Kate taught us how to build our own speakers, starting from first principles in **DIY Speakers & Headphones.
And then, taking us into the Friday night party, Craig taught us how to get good at go with Learn to Play Go / Baduk / Weiqi.
For the Friday Fireside Marco cooked up a truly amazing batch of tejuino for us to drink and prepared some snacks to go along with it.
The day wasn't over yet, we still had a bunch more to learn. Right after the party Danny taught us about his life, his practice, and his philosophy in The Disrupting Sketchbook.
And then Roy closed us out with three hours of everyone's favorite version control tool: a git primer called Git and Github: A Thorough Introduction.
Wow what a day, TGIF can't wait for the weekend.
We're Halfway There!!!
Written by Anthony Bui on June 14, 2018, 1:33am
You're tired and your brain is saturated. You've downloaded 20 new programs and your computer keeps complaining about hard drive space but you aren't quite ready to delete your vacation photos from 10 years ago. You're getting sleep, but your dreams don't make sense anymore: Why can't I import my 3D scan into Arduino? How do I create a MAX patch to open Terminal (I can never find the damn thing, anyway) and animate it with Cinema 4D. You might even entertain taking this weekend off, but you won't. You crave it like we crave it. You can't bear to miss a full day of interesting sessions. One of us! One of us! One of us!
But have no fear, your counselors are here! We'll keep you in the loop. Here's todays highlights:
Making Data Tangible: Part I
Cheng Xu and Paul Buffa drop by to remind us how much data we have, and well, we might as well visualize it! They demonstrate how to visualize your data and turn it into a physical object.
3D Scanning Your Own Digital Avatar
Matt Romein breaks out the StructureSensor and shows us how to 3D scan ourselves. Even better, he shows us how to dance like we've always wanted to dance. I can't Samba in real-life, but the 3D me can Thriller for days.
The Drawing+ Club Presents...
Counselors Stevie and Terrick share a bit of ITP tradition and guide us through a nice and relaxing drawing session.
When the Physical Meets the Digital, and the Ethics of an Overlayed World
David Polinchock reviews a variety of projects that have combined the physical and the digital to create interesting experiments in the future of space. Such a lively conversation around all of our work!
PoseNet in Tensorflow.js: real-time human pose estimation in the browser.
Dan Oved teaches cutting-edge machine learning to a FULL HOUSE. He shows us the future, and how we too can join in on the fun of pose estimation... in the browser!
Fashion Pollution Solutions Part 1 of 2 - A Design Charette
ITP alum Eric Nadler and Towhee Co. stop by to remind us that "Fashion is the 8th Most Polluting Industry". It's terrible how much so many of us depend on and desire the availability of vast amounts of inexpensive clothing. Can we be better?
Talk Bot to Me Workshop: Service Design a Chatbot Experience
Alina Balea and Natalie Kuhn teach us about chatbots, with a focus on characters and story development.
3D Animation with C4d
Leandra gives us a second helping of Cinema 4D. Together, we build puzzles and animate everything!
WTF is sudo: Command line basics
Enrique GarcÃa and Ashlin end our night with a history lesson in computers before they looked cool. They provide a quick your of the UNIX command line and share the beauty of homebrew!
WHEW!!! That was a jam packed day! I hope you're ready to do it all again tomorrow. ;)
Much Love, Counselors
Tuesday again? No Problem 👌
Written by Alden Jones on June 12, 2018, 9:05pm
A packed day today, Jonah started us off eaaarly this morning (10AM!) with some group texting in interactive installation: Engaging Mobile Audiences With SMS: Creating Interactive Displays In Public Space, and then Anita brought us through the lunch hour giving us some illustrator skills in Intro To Adobe Illustrator.
Then we built our own pianos with Matt in Creating Player Pianos With MaxMSPJitter and built our own tiny TVs with Nick in Big Picture: Tiny Screens. What will we be building next 🤔 Modems? Game consoles?
Chris then helped usher us toward the robot apocalypse by making our emotions intelligible to machines in Workshop on Heightening Emotional AI. Things got pretty intense!
Day still had plenty to offer even after all that. After teatime we got into the real business. The partytime business. We got pretty lit as Brandon taught us how to use addressable LEDs in Light It Up, which were the perfect visual accompaniment to the music we were making with Andrew in Algorave: Live Coding Music.
Then from the party back to the home: Sebastian helped us design our own 3d printed plant home in Succulent Planter - Fusion 360 intro and 3D printing, and then from learning how to keep our plant healthy and housed we learned how to keep our community healthy with Casey's The Dark Arts: Brainwashing, Cults, and What Separates Healthy from Unhealthy Communities.
Monday? Again?
Written by Alden Jones on June 11, 2018, 8:37pm
The work week began with two sessions on helping artists in two areas that aren't nearly talked about enough: Marilyn on artists' legal ownership rights with Copyright | Knowing Your Creative Rights and Dror leading a session on project management skills for your creative work called How To Build Outstanding Work That Makes An Impact.
In the afternoon we had a party, a Servo Party. Alex taught how to set up a servo motor for motion and how to use a bottle of water to control your servo ðŸ˜
After a quick PB&J snack break the evening opened up with Jim giving us those good data science skills, leading Introduction to Python Data Analysis Tools with Google Colab. We also delved two levels deep into another reality with John leading Making VR in VR. INCEPTION!!!
At the end of the night we had Nisma teaching us how to interview artists properly with The Artist Interview and Video Profiles. Let's put those skills to work and start interviewing each other, maybe make a camp biopic?
Camp Weekend II, Saturday Special: Mindful Web-Clubbing in Paris and Off-The-Grid Art for Harry-Potter Magic
Written by Roland on June 10, 2018, 4:03pm
We opened on Saturday with another Kundalini Yoga Brain Break led by Gail - the balanced way to start the weekend!
The morning moved on from yoga-induced brain-body augmentation to Augmented Reality: Effy guided campers through the ins and outs of the use of Unity with AR in Augmented Reality 101 with Weather API. The icing on the cake was the use of real-time weather data from the french capital with an API displayed on a printout of the Eiffel-Tower. Bonjour Paris!
After so much augmentation campers explored everything in the third-dimension in Intro To Maya with Michael: 3d-modeling and rendering tips spiced up this Saturday lunchtime-intro to the software.
The afternoon was dedicated to making music with the web: In Or and Dror’s Making Music with Social Data and Max’s Playing the Internet: Web-Audio basics - campers fully immersed themselves in 3 hours of beats and bleeps powered by the one and only INTERNET! Why go clubbing when you have ITP CAMP?!
While some went web-clubbing on the floor, others went off the grid: How can we untether our prototypes and make them more independent? In Physical Computing: Off the Grid and Into the Wild Cy answered all those questions with an overview on battery, solar, satellite and cellular in an artistic context. Let’s set all of our prototypes free now!
Ideation on your own is good, ideation in a group is even better: Camp is THE place to do that and Anita and Boris took the lead on a meeting about Interactive Spaces: ideas, ideas, ideas were floating around, let’s see what will end up as a prototype at camp show & tell - show.
A good way to move from ideas to real-physical objects is the Z-Brush software. Katya covered that maker’s - journey with Intro to ZBrush: Make any Enclosure You Want. Happy making!
As the daylight slowly faded we started lighting things up with Harry Potter Magic. In Effy’s Use a Leap Motion and Control LEDs Campers did exactly that in a hands-on (or off?) session to finish off the day with building a few tech-powered miracles.
Camp closed for Saturday shortly afterwards and we switched off the lights - Sunday was waiting with new adventures for us brave campers!
The end of the first week, the start of a new one!
Written by sejo (se-ho) on June 9, 2018, 1:54pm
Yesterday we had a day full of sessions that ended with a great celebration in the first Friday Fireside - Art Jam organized by Darren!
In the morning we had the opportunity to have an intimate time sharing music with Marilyn, followed by a great yoga session led by Gail. Later on, ITP student Amitabh shared many resources about MicroPython - an implementation of Python 3 which runs on micro-controllers, and our un-director Kate Hartman led a great session about using materials as sensors. Here are some pictures:
Making some tests...
Gail posing with some new garment...
Smita talked about strange shapes in the second session of her series Adventures in Topological Modelling:
And finally we had an extraordinary improvisation session as proposed by Darren: music, visuals, dance, food and drinks coming together to create a great time and a celebration of our first week at camp!
Music, dance and visuals!
Darren creating sound
We are very excited to start a new week full of sessions, work, gathering, sharing, and fun!
