Black Rock City/Burning Man is currently in need of an experienced Web Producer responsible for the technical aspects of the development and maintenance of all public facing websites. Responsibilities include performance or oversight of the website technical implementation, site structure and architecture, design, maintenance, web activity reporting, needs analysis, project management, web application development management, social network integration, and user support. It is important that this individual is aware of industry issues, trends, and emerging technologies and can make well-considered recommendations for web technology improvements and strategies. This position reports to the head of the Technology Department and supervises a project manager, project based developers and a large team of volunteers.

 

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Responsible for production and maintenance of all public facing web sites and related applications. This involves performing tasks, delegating tasks, managing team members and cultivating the volunteers supporting our various web efforts.

Support includes, but is not limited to the following websites and their derivatives. Support also extends to any new websites produced by Black Rock City, LLC or other new projects.

 

Duties include:

*Supervise team and perform tasks as necessary to ensure availability and functionality of websites and supporting functions.

*Ensure timely updates and modifications made to website content, architecture, and configurations, either through hands-on work or delegation.

*Collaborate with Communications and Technology Departments to develop web technology strategies to most effectively showcase public facing web content.

*Lead stakeholders and team members through initial web site development exercises in order to determine overall site structure, design, content and maintenance strategy.

*Coordinate efforts of technical team members and other stakeholders as necessary in order to produce web sites that support the organizations web strategy.

*Monitor and manage resolution of new content requests, change requests, bug reports and user support issues.

*Chair web team volunteer/staff meetings every two weeks and other web production related meetings as necessary. Ensure timely distribution of agendas, connectivity instructions, meeting notes and action items.

*Create contracts, participate in candidate screening and perform administration required to engage project-based contracts as necessary to support specific web development projects.

*Monitor and report website analytics and report trends and anomalies in support of business, communication and technology efforts.

*Ensure timely resolution of any website or associated system outages.

*Maintain awareness of emerging web industry trends and best practices and recommend strategies for incorporating both as appropriate.

*Cultivate environment to engage with and leverage the skills of a wide range of web technology volunteers.

*Participate in technology planning and prioritization efforts.

*Engage in efforts to appreciate all staff and volunteers.

*Provide timely reporting of work accomplished by team members and volunteers.

*Write internal Ember Report for annual debrief cycle.

*Write external Afterburn report or other public facing web reports as necessary.

*Provide updates regarding web site efforts and systems at staff meetings and other forums as necessary.

*Participation Volunteer Recruitment open houses.

*Participation in Regional Leadership Summit.

*Attendance at All-Staff Meetings and Staff Development Trainings.

*Participation in off-site Debriefs, Retreats, and other sessions as necessary.

 

DOES THIS DESCRIBE YOU?

*4 year degree in Technology field or equivalent work experience.

*Experience leading teams through development and deployment of at least 4 different websites.

*2 years or more experience managing website maintenance efforts.

*2 years project management and/or production management experience.

*These technologies are used at Burning Man and the right candidate should have some exposure and hands-on experience with several of them: WordPress, Mantis, CSS3, xhtml, CVS, SVN, Mercurial, Github, Form creation tools, APIs, PHP5, Django, Ruby on Rails, Apache, LDAP, Open Source

*Practical experience with numerous website software platforms, development tools, methodologies and best practices for process management.

*Previous experience working in development and production software environments.

*Previous experience using change control software and managing change control processes.

*Leadership experience managing the resolution of production support issues in a high profile and high-risk environment.

*Previous experience designing and managing project-based contract positions.

*Previous experience providing or managing end user support efforts.

*Ability to supervise and mentor others to foster a cooperative and collaborative work environment.

*Very strong written and verbal communication skills.

*Very detail oriented.

*Very motivated by and interested in current and emerging web technology trends.

*Significant knowledge and experience within the Burning Man organization and community.

*Dedicated to principles of behavior and ethics of the Burning Man organization.

*Highly motivated.

*Very strong social, networking, and interpersonal skills.

*The ability to work effectively within an organization that encourages creativity, radical self-expression and radical self-reliance along with communal effort

*Ability to live and work in the harsh physical environment of the Burning Man event location on the Black Rock desert of Nevada for 2-3 weeks out of every year, mostly during August and September.
