The Berkman Center for Internet & Society is looking for a senior developer and a junior developer who will thrive in a creative, fun, and fast-paced atmosphere with a team of extremely talented and dedicated developers and co-workers. We love real time data, finding interesting ways to aggregate social networking statistics and have access to fascinating internet research data from all over the world; this is the stuff that you could be knee deep in!
The developers will work closely with a growing team of developers, researchers and staff on all phases of the application development cycle, including planning, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
The Berkman Center for Internet & Society is a research center founded to explore cyberspace, share in its study, and help pioneer its development. We represent a network of faculty, students, fellows, entrepreneurs, lawyers, and virtual architects working to identify and engage with the challenges and opportunities of cyberspace, and work with researchers, computer scientists, activists, librarians, musicians, and more from all corners of the university and beyond. *Required education, experience and skills:*
* We are looking for people who love clean, well-designed code. Some combination of education and experience is required, such as BS in computer science or engineering, prior work experience, internships, Google Summer of Code or personal code that has experienced load by a human.
* Experience with Ruby, Rails, PHP. Perl, Javascript, CSS, and HTML is valued, but all are not essential. Interest in learning these and more is required; we are ready to invest in, teach and support the right person in gaining the necessary skills.
* Ever write a tool to transform realtime data? Written Javascript code to modify a page according to explicit and implicit user behavior? Have a desire to contribute a jQuery library or ruby gem to handle twitter/facebook/google data to the open source community? We work with all kinds of data, so having an open and creative take on modelling is a plus.
*What we build:*
For our web applications, we use Ruby on Rails, Perl or PHP in combination with jQuery (we also maintain a few Java applications). Mysql, Postgres and Couch provide the backend, but we’re open minded about new technology, too. We deploy via passenger, mod_perl and mod_jk on apache, use Lucene/Solr for search, and tomcat for our Java applications. We maintain many production applications on primarily open source infrastructure.

* We’ll ask you for your opinion and expect you to have one.
* That coding is your lifestyle; you have and admire your ability to pick up new technologies in days and weeks not months and years.
* We’ll have you create software with the languages and tools that best match the job.
* That you will be able to refactor and improve existing applications, and build new ones from scratch.
* We’ve got great sysadmin support but if you’ve got the skills, expect to use them.

Berkman is a fast-paced academic environment, and developers need to be adaptable, flexible and persistent, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and communicate effectively about timelines and development priorities. It requires a person able to successfully maintain a complex suite of web applications for high uptime, performance, and reliability.
