[JOB] Lead Developer, Temboo

A startup based in Tribeca and Portland, Temboo makes smart, approachable code for developers. From DevShortcuts for data cleansing to simplified and flexible methods that hook into 100+ APIs, we build powerful tools that improve and expedite the app-making process.
Tembooleans are an intellectually curious bunch and we’d love to have more ITPers in the mix (ITP ’09 and ’11 currently represent!). We’re hiring for a few key positions (descriptions below) with more jobs to be found at www.temboo.com/jobs

Temboo is a small startup (we put the fun in funded) that’s changing the way code gets written. Our offices in New York and Portland are full of smart people who want to impact and improve how technology is created and utilized. We’re building a unique platform that lets developers effortlessly link their applications with web and cloud services. Our SDK is a one-stop-shop for integrating with everything from Amazon to Yahoo without wrestling with the difference between APIs or protocols. We research, curate, and document the programmable web, with customizable code examples and tools for wrangling OAuth headaches, credential management, usage monitoring, and more, so you can focus on the “what” and “why” of your software (and leave the headaches of 3rd-party connectivity to us).

We’re looking for a seasoned, hands-on technical leader to spearhead the development of our technologies. You’ll be in charge of coordinating one or more small project teams and will act as a hands-on lead developer. Strong coding and design skills are important in this role; even more important is your ability to understand the big picture relationships between groups, systems-scale components, and projects. We want you to be a playmaker, a person who is able to make things happen because they know where to contribute the vital push: whether it’s testing, writing specs, or cranking out code.

Our platform lives mainly in the cloud and includes a clustered Java workflow-execution environment, a PHP webtier, and a desktop client; technologies we love include memcached, mod_pagespeed, NoSQL DBs, Akka, distributed filesystems, and whatever else it takes to get the job done. We try to work smart, keep our process agile, and keep our focus on simple, elegant solutions.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Hands-on front-end and back-end web development.
  • Researching technologies and writing technical specs for new features.
  • Coordinating the efforts of multiple developers on a project team, and providing guidance to other team members.
  • Working with our product, documentation and QA groups to make sure that when we roll out new functionality, is well tested, clearly explained, and a pleasure for our users.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR IN YOU

  • 7+ years of software development experience, including experience in a team lead role.
  • Experience working in a startup or early-stage company.
  • Strong experience using webservice APIs (REST, SOAP, or both).
  • Prior experience in a lead or key design role on a complex commercial web app.
  • Expert knowledge of PHP and related LAMP-stack technologies.
  • Functional knowledge of one of the following (in order of preference): Java, C#, C++, Python, Ruby.
  • Fluency with both back-end and front-end development (and willingness to tackle both).
  • Superior communication skills, including experience writing specs.
  • Experience with distributed architectures.
  • Ideally, experience with clustering and virtualization.

Our company culture promotes individual contribution, innovation, excellence, and the belief that work should also be fun. We offer competitive compensation, flexible working hours, a casual office environment, and respect for individual contribution and autonomy. We’re looking for people who have interests outside of work as well (please mention some of these in your cover letter if you like).

Does this sound like you? If so, there may be a place for you at Temboo. Candidates outside the New York and Portland area will be considered for relocation.

HOW TO APPLY

Send us your resume, a sample of a specification (technical or functional) that you’ve written, a code sample, and a cover letter. Describe the coolest thing you ever did/made online. Email jobs@temboo.com and include “Lead Developer” in the subject line.
