Lynn from Brooklyn Ballet is looking for a collaborator for a digital set design. She wants to track the position of several dancers as they move across the stage, and then project these paths on the back wall where an audience could see it. My first impression was to use camera mounted up above the stage looking down and possibly use OpenCV to track individual dancers based on something distinguishable (colored dot? costume color?), process only these “dots” to create lines and pathways, then project those in real time. There is also dance notation that is set to the musical score that could be used to generate the pathways, but as I’m not familiar with dance notation you would need to talk with Lynn more about this possibility. If anyone has done anything like this before or is interested, please contact Lynn directly and just cc me so I know someone is on it. It might be a good final project for an advanced ICM student, 2nd year, or resident.
