[CALL] PhD program at Georgia Tech

Subject: Digital Media @ Georgia Tech Invites Applications for MS & PhD Programs

Dear Colleague,

We’re sending this to a selected list of people and programs whose students we would particularly like to
see apply for a Digital Media M.S. or Digital Media Ph.D at Georgia Tech. Please pass this notice on to
your students and direct them to http://dm.gatech.edu for more information about our program. Please
alert them to our OPEN HOUSE DEC 12th with informational session for prospective applicants and to
our ADMISSIONS DEADLINES (see below).

The Digital Media Graduate Program at Georgia Tech, with its home in the School of Literature, Media,
and Communication, is the oldest humanities-based academic program in digital media in the country and
offers one of the first PhDs in digital media worldwide. It offers a unified studio-intensive curriculum that
integrates theory and practice and is taught by a uniquely strong group of theorist-practitioner faculty
members. In addition, students in the program regularly take courses with faculty in related fields such as
Computing, Human Computer Interaction, Music Technology, Architecture, Industrial Design, Cognitive
Science, Psychology, and Public Policy. We also offer a joint M.S. degree in HCI.

Faculty in the program include leading researchers in critical theory, interaction design, information
design, digital art and design, experimental media, game studies, interactive narrative, machinima, mixed
reality, tangible media, cognition & computing, and educational computing. http://dm.gatech.edu/people/

Students come from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds and from an international
pool. MS students have had internships and/or jobs at companies such as Yahoo, Entertainment Arts,
Google, Amazon, Intel, IBM, and Showtime, and some have gone on to do PhD work at Georgia Tech or
elsewhere.

The PhD program currently numbers 23 students and 7 graduates drawn from first rank programs in a
wide range of disciplines, whose research specialties include: Information & Interaction Design, Digital Art
& Design, Experimental Game Design, Interactive Narrative, Experimental Television, Mixed Reality,
Physical Computing, Embodied Interaction, Media Theory, and History & Criticism. Although we are open
to applications from students with Bachelor degrees, so far all students admitted to our PhD program
have had Masters degrees before coming to Georgia Tech. Some applicants have been initially admitted
to the DM MS program and have later been accepted into the PhD program. Graduates of the PhD
program are prepared for research and teaching careers in the fast growing number of digital media
academic programs or for work in industry research labs.

For more information about the program please visit http://dm.gatech.edu. Contact mazalek@gatech.edu
with academic questions; alison.nichols@lmc.gatech.edu with administrative questions.

Potential applicants are encouraged to attend an optional INFORMATIONAL SESSION Wed Dec 12 at
12pm at Georgia Tech, Technology Square Research Bldg. auditorium, followed by our WINTER DEMO
SHOWCASE from 1pm-3pm, offering a good glimpse into the research and project work of the program.
