Access is an international human rights organization dedicated to defending and extending the digital rights of users at risk around the world. With offices in Brussels, New York, Santiago, Tunis, Washington, San Jose Costa Rica and Manila, and we combine innovative policy, user engagement, and direct technical support, and work globally with activists, civil society, and policymakers to build technical capacity and advocate for open and secure communications for all.

Advocacy Arm and the Campaign Internship

Access is at the forefront of efforts to advocate for an open and secure internet that supports and encourages free expression and universal access to information. The Digital Engagement Intern at Access will work on cutting edge digital media and creative strategies aimed at tackling some of today’s most pressing human rights challenges.

The Digital Engagement Intern will design and create engagement materials for outreach to the public and our growing global movement of 400,000 users to take action on issues including but not limited to net neutrality, surveillance, and online privacy. The intern will work closely with the Advocacy team to conceptualize and develop innovative ideas and deliver them to action-takers in digital and physical forms, such as emails, petitions, social media message, and all kinds of online/offline campaigns.

A digital engagement intern can expect to learn how to….

  • Help develop and execute savvy, exciting advocacy campaigns and innovative digital strategies
  • Edit and create videos, motion graphics, memes, images, and other visual assets for our various digital platforms, including our websites
  • Create a geek-out funny meme-lol for our meme wall

Qualifications

The Digital Engagement Intern has a love for digital communications. They love the internet and know how to use it’s multifaceted avenues of creativity and expression. This is a creative and strategic role that will enable the intern to be actively involved in crafting and refining Access’ image, message and online presence, and to do this applicants must have strong communication skills in the widest sense. Someone who can create intriguingly great gifs, posters, memes and vines, but can also take an idea, develop that idea, and make it a great one.

They’re highly motivated individuals with strong academic records and an interest in learning how to run advocacy campaigns on a global scale. They should have strong technical skill set, and the ability and desire to learn how to use the internet to save the internet.

We’re looking for students or recent graduates in graphic and visual design, communications, journalism, marketing, international relations, human rights and so on. Proficiency in programs like Adobe, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Fireworks, data visualization, CSS/JAVA script/Adobe After Effects would be great. Being well organized, motivated, and reliable will help your application, as will fluency in a foreign language, but if you only speak English, that’s fine too.

The Advocacy team are based in Washington DC and NYC. The intern can work from either amazing office. However, due to our love of the internet, we’re happy to talk virtually and applicants will be considered from locations worldwide.

Time Commitment

  • One full academic term (usually 3 to 4 months)
  • 16-20 hours per week, more if you like, (full time is fine!)
  • Start ASAP!
  • Unpaid position (sorry), academic credit available
