The Data Science Intern has a real passion finding business insights in huge datasets. Well-qualified candidates are excited by contributing to open source projects, by participating in technical communities or interest groups, or by writing or speaking in public about their technical ideas. A Data Scientist Intern at McKinsey will be an active learner and will enjoy tinkering with new open source libraries, using unfamiliar technologies and working with interesting data sets in their spare time.

Exercise: Given a dataset of transactions (100k rows) from a large retailer, find groups of items that are frequently purchased together. Each row is a single transaction with a ‘1’ denoting that item was in the transaction. Submit your findings along with any code/description of tools used to solve the problem. Technical skills and experience
• Strong experience using at least one high level programming language (e.g. Java, C, C#)
• Knowledge of Python (or other scripting language) and databases (Oracle, MySQL, MongoDB, etc.)
• Experience in any of the following is a plus: machine learning, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, statistics
• Knowledge of the agile software development process is a plus Non-technical competencies
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills paired with the ability to develop creative and efficient solutions
• Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills
• Ability to work both independently and in various team settings
