Creative Technologist
Second Story seeks a formally trained software engineer to inform and execute innovative interactive media projects. The software engineer is a visionary thinker with an inquisitive mind to learn new technologies and is accomplished at expressing creativity through creative coding frameworks such as openFrameworks, Cinder and
Processing. The engineer is a creative technologist passionate about creating informative, usable, and inspiring media installations.
Second Story conceptualizes, designs, and develops interactive media experiences that enchant, inform, and entertain—pioneering new ways to inspire wonder and connect audiences to stories, ideas, and information. Our studio is intensely collaborative and collegial across all disciplines. We strive for an atmosphere in which the work is paramount, but where individual effort can also shine. We all share a love for storytelling and a desire to make great things. What animates Second Story is the devotion to building experiences that inspire wonder, drive action, and create delight. As a core member of the project team the software engineer collaborates with designers, producers, and interactive developers to inform the projects’ development trajectory, including prototyping, planning, architecting, and executing code.
THE CREATIVE TECHNOLOGIST MUST BE:
● A software engineer with imagination and passion for building new experiences at the intersection of art, storytelling and technology.
● An effective communicator that successfully collaborates with other developers, designers, producers, engineers, fabricators, and contractors.
● An experienced programmer with strong c++ programming experience, using creative coding frameworks to build dynamic data driven interactive media experiences. Experienced in programming OpenGL graphics and developing on multiple platforms. Experience in other languages such as Processing and Python is a plus.
● A trained computer scientist with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience knowledgeable in modern machine learning and computer vision algorithms with experience applying these to real world interactive experiences. Familiar with physical computing platforms such as Rasberry Pi or Arduino.
● A playful experimenter with an interest and experience in developing for novel digital media platforms and devices.
● A practical, pragmatic innovator whose solutions elicit responses that justify the effort and expense.
This is an exceptional opportunity for a rewarding career to inform, inspire, educate, enchant, and entertain—as opposed to sell—audiences through diverse projects for significant and influential cultural institutions and brands. This position is located in New York City with a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, disability, employer-contributed 401(k), and professional development funds.
