and Developer

The LAB @ OPM is the only entity of its kind in the federal
government. Based at the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM), The Lab brings
together a unique combination of private sector fellows, public servants, and students who work
collaboratively to drive human-centered, design-led innovation across the federal government.
We’re looking for a UX/UI Designer and Developer, who will spend 12-18 months in a leadership
position on a government-wide UX design and implementation project.
In partnership with The Lab’s leadership team and permanent and rotating staff, the UX/UI
Designer will work with OPM leadership and internal development teams on a human-centered
The ideal candidate would bring significant UI/UX design and front-end development
expertise to this position and a desire to collaborate with emerging federal practitioners of human-
centered design in order to improve people’s experience when interacting with the Federal

Detailed Position Description
• Lead the design and implementation of UX products from a human-centered design
perspective. This includes:
o Empathy-based qualitative user testing to understand their needs,
o Synthesis of user testing data to understand behavior with the product and how it
relates to the overall design project goals,
o Lead structured and unstructured ideation sessions using a variety of human-
centered design tools to foster the divergent thinking that leads to breakthrough
ideas,
o Lead creation of low, medium, and high fidelity prototype development including
the ability to develop hand drawn storyboards, thumbnail sketches, wireframes
and mockups, and
o Develop high fidelity prototypes using CSS, HTML and JavaScript (an
understanding of .Net desired, but not required),
o Coordinate between the design team and development team to ensure all work
• Lead and work on a multi-disciplinary team made of designers, policy experts, and
developers under very tight timelines and be responsible for driving collaborative and
positive team dynamics.
• Past experience working on collaborative, fast-paced website builds is required, and
experience as a technical project/product manager will set you apart.
• Directly facilitate problem-solving sessions, human-centered design immersion projects,
design sprints, and other meetings and sessions as needed.
• Support agencies in applying and testing prototypes in their home environment, providing
ongoing coaching, facilitation and resources as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
