ITPers,
Lillian Schwartz is a legendary computational artist and filmmaker. Her pioneering work at Bell Labs in the 1960s, 70s and 80s helped define possibilities for the computer as an artistic tool. Lillian’s projects with scientists, mathematicians and engineers at the Labs are models for interdisciplinary collaboration, and I think she’s a ideological friend to ITP, if there ever was one.
Lillian is now 88, and lives alone on the Upper East Side. She continues to make work, but she can no longer do it alone. Due to diminishing vision, her ability to create models and to edit video is quite limited. As such, she is looking to work with collaborators, who might be able to help her realize her visions and continue her practice despite physical limitations.
This is an amazing opportunity. Not only will you be able to collaborate with a legendary artist, you’ll get the chance to learn more about the history of computational art, and you’ll get to spend time with a truly exceptional human being.
Schedule can be very flexible, though she is looking for people who can commit to regular visits over at least 3 months. As Lillian’s recent work involves 3D modeling, it is preferred that interested people have experience in this area and/or with video editing.
If you are interested, please get in touch with me (jer@o-c-r.org) and I can in turn put you in touch with Lillian.
Best,
-Jer Thorp
