Freelance News Developer, MSNBC Digital
This role will be part of the Product Design group at MSNBC Digital. The Product Design team at MSNBC Digital is responsible for the digital presence of MSNBC and has the responsibility of providing best-in-class user experiences for MSNBC’s digital product portfolio. Our team is small but mighty and includes visual designers, a UX designer and a data visualization developer. We interact with numerous stakeholders across the organization including writers, editors, photographers, producers, product managers and others.
The freelance news developer will be primarily working on a series of related long-form multimedia features, each of which will be released approximately every 3 weeks over the next 6 months. Additional work is also a possibility, including site work for msnbc.com as well as prototyping for new products. Please note this job will start at 25 hours per week for 6 months, with the possibility of increasing to 40 hours a week depending on fit and need.
Qualifications & Responsibilities:

Minimum 3 years of experience coding semantically-correct, standards-compliant websites

Demonstrated proficiency with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and jQuery (and other Javascript libraries)

Demonstrated proficiency with mobile development best practices (i.e. responsive design, progressive enhancement, graceful degradation)

Ability to code solid cross-platform experiences

BS degree (or equivalent work experience) in Computer Science or related field

Experience working in a team environment

Strong interpersonal communication skills

A portfolio that demonstrates aptitude, skillsets and accomplishments
Nice to Haves:

Interest in news and politics
-
Drupal Theming experience or equivalent (i.e. WordPress, Joomla, etc.)

Experience working as a visual or UX designer on web projects

Experience completing data analysis and data visualization, especially using tools such as SAS or SPSS, use of D3 libraries, jQuery, Protoviz, etc.
