About The Project + Event

Yesterday it was “colored only” entrances, sun-down towns, and lynchings.

Today, stop-and-frisk, the shooting of unarmed civilians, and unjust harassment do Jim Crow’s work.

Systemic racism constrains African-American movement across the United States now as in the past.

Traveling While Black: The Preview Event is a sneak peek into the Traveling While Black transmedia project, including a live performance, a discussion led by Oscar-award winning Director Roger Ross Williams, and a teaser of the project’s first virtual reality film. The Preview Event introduces audiences to the forthcoming suite of experiences that will

comprise the entire Traveling While Black project, including a traveling museum exhibit, VR films, events, and stories from the ground. TWB explores ways to provoke dialogue, change perspectives, and find common ground for change by putting audiences face-to-face with past and present realities of systemic discrimination against African-Americans through the unique prism of travel.
