CALL: Research Fellowships for Smart Textiles

WHAT ARE YOU DOING THIS SUMMER?
$3000 Research Fellowships for Smart Textiles
Pratt Institute/Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator (BF+DA)
May 22 – July 21, 2017
Are you an experimenter, curious about how things work and interested in wearable technology? Do you
enjoy testing the limits, guring things out and working with others to solve problems? Do advanced
manufacturing, emerging technologies and the Internet of Everything unleash your inner innovator?
We are looking for four highly creative, technology savvy people to join us in developing a series of
activated material swatches that will integrate the technical with the traditional – from conductive yarn to
nanotech textiles to to bio-sensors, our research fellows will work side-by-side to develop textiles that
improve lives.
The BF+DA “TEK-TILES” initiative is focused on developing responsible technology that improves health
and well being, safety in the workplace and enhanced environments by supporting projects and research
that will integrate useful technologies into fabrics and garments. Imagine a knit glove that can “talk” to
your physical therapist remotely – allowing her to monitor your mobility in real time using augmented
reality, or a garment that keeps tracks of your stress levels or lets you know you if you’re entering a
restricted area, or an acoustical panel that adapts to environmental conditions by changing the character
of sound in a room.
This is a great opportunity for recent grads, soon to be grads and current students who want a hands-on
design experience in wearable technology, textile development and apparel manufacturing. Research
Fellows will be considered for ongoing research into the Fall and Spring semesters to develop manufac-
tured prototypes of their projects.
Candidate interviews will be scheduled from now until April 20th.
What’s in it for you?
– $3000 BF+DA Research Fellowship Award
– Shared studio space in the BF+DA TEK-TILE lab, access to the BF+DA apparel production lab
and work side-by-side with our network of manufacturing, technology and material experts
– A great research-based project for your portfolio
