Clinical Assistant Professor
The School of Information at the University of Michigan (UMSI) seeks a clinical-track professor at the assistant level. This position will teach courses that have significant engaged learning components through applied practice and engagement with community and industry partners. We are particularly interested in teaching and practice experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Citizen engagement – such as those who have worked within information technology to increase citizen participation;
- Information and communication technology for development – such as those who have worked with NGOs/governments/non-profits to help underserved populations use technology to increase social mobility, community well-being and economic development;
- Making – such as developers/designers of maker spaces/curricula in the context of schools/libraries/museums;
- Design – someone who has been a designer and can introduce UMSI students to design thinking and help them apply design thinking to solve real world problems; and
- Innovation and entrepreneurship – someone who has been an entrepreneur and can help UMSI students to approach problems from an entrepreneurial perspective.
The Clinical Assistant Professor will work closely with our newly created Office of Professional and Community Engagement, who staff and coordinate several ongoing engaged learning programs at UMSI, including Citizen Interaction Design and the Global Information Engagement Program. The successful candidate engages in professional activity that complements our existing areas of expertise, such as computer-supported cooperative work; incentive-centered design; digital curation; information seeking, sharing and use; community informatics; Internet-scale data, network and text analysis; social computing; and health informatics. We are especially interested in qualified applicants whose research addresses important social problems, opportunities, and questions associated with the aforementioned areas of interest to the School.
In additional to teaching, this position will be responsible for mentoring students. The School’s strong commitment to service carries with it the expectation of service to the School, university, and external communities and this service will be expected to have impact and influence on the communities served. Less emphasis will be placed on scholarly publication and a formal research record, but candidates will be expected to be able to demonstrated outstanding work at the level of professional engagement and practice through a variety of professional products. As with all faculty, criteria for appointment will include evaluation of the impact of the faculty member’s work in the community of their peers as well as those they serve in their practice, but for clinical faculty, impact will be measured in ways beyond scholarly publication.

The School is home to vibrant research and teaching programs, with 59 core faculty, and nearly 850 students. We offer four degrees: a Ph.D., a Master of Science in Information, a Master of Health Informatics, and a Bachelor of Science in Information.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years professional experience in an area such as information, computer science, engineering, business, design, or related fields
- Demonstrated potential for successful teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels
- Demonstrated potential for directing student project teams
- Demonstrated potential for working in collaboration with staff and external clients/sponsors
- Ability to develop new course materials
- Ability to organize and administer professional practice activities
- A strong commitment to teaching, service, interdisciplinary practice and research, and diversity
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced degree in an area, such as information, computer science, engineering, business, design, or related fields preferred
