As a member of the community, we truly value your insight and invite you to encourage qualified artists for the Edward and Sally Van Lier Fellowship.
Van Lier Candidates will apply to Smack Mellon’s Artist Studio Program and be considered for a Van Lier funded residency ($5,000 fellowship) among all the qualifying applicants from an open call process. Three out of six studios will be reserved for Van Lier artists.
The New York Community Trust’s Edward and Sally Van Lier Fund provides support for talented, culturally diverse, economically disadvantaged young people who are seriously dedicated to a career in the arts. Recipients should reside in New York City and be age 30 or younger, with demonstrated financial need.
Applicants for the Van Lier funded residency must follow the stipulations of the grant:

Be thirty years or younger at the start of the fellowship (July 1, 2020);

Identify racially and or culturally with a historically underrepresented community·

Demonstrate the need for financial assistance to advance their artistic careers;

Be a New York City-resident.
All applicants for Smack Mellon’s Artist Studio Program should be emerging or early career artists and must reside within the five boroughs of New York City.

Be United States citizens or legal Permanent Residents of the United States

Be 18 years or older;

May not be enrolled in any degree program;

Must be able to demonstrate need for a studio;

May not be a resident artist in another studio program at the same time as the Smack Mellon residency, July 1, 2020 to June 15, 2021.
Applications will be reviewed by a selection panel that includes previous studio artists and guest curators and critics. The application closes November 1st, 2019.
