Mitu’s Hybrid Arts Lab supports women, trans, and non-binary artists working at the intersection of performance and technology. With a focus on early career BIPOC artists, this program offers studio and creation space, technical resources, training, and mentorship to a small cohort for the exploration, development, and expansion of their practice and a new artwork. The program culminates in a series of in-process studio visits that invites our community into a conversation about process and innovation.
2024 marks our fifth annual Hybrid Arts Lab and thanks to the generous support of New York Community Trust’s Van Lier Fellowship Program, we will convene a cohort of three artists for ten months this year. Each artist will receive support to develop an artwork bridging performance and technology. This support includes: a $5,000 unrestricted stipend; six weeks of shared studio space, equipment, and technology at MITU580; mentorship and guidance from Founding Artistic Director Rubén Polendo; training and classes with guest artists modeling creative uses of hardware and software tools in art-making; and a series of in-process studio visits.

Participation Eligibility:
– – – Artists are required to be local in New York City and prepared for all in-person activities. COVID-19 vaccination and booster is required for participation. Virtual or remote participation will not be an option unless wellness concerns demand that we adjust for community health and safety.
– – – This program is focused on supporting BIPOC women, trans, and non-binary artists working at the intersection of performance and technology. We welcome applications from everyone interested in the program or the organization, however we will be prioritizing BIPOC women, trans, and non-binary artists for acceptance.
– – – This program is dedicated to emerging artists between 18-30 years old who are not currently enrolled in a degree granting program, have not had a major public presentation of their solo work in New York City, and have not previously or are not currently participating in a Van Lier Fellowship.
– – – As an arts practice fellowship, a commitment to work at the intersection of performance and technology, a commitment to acquire new skills, and a willingness to publicly share in-process aspects of a new artwork are required components of successful participation in the program.
Program Schedule Requirements:
The following schedule is subject to change based on participant needs and organizational capacity but reflects the overall time commitment required to participate in the Hybrid Arts Lab.
– – – The Hybrid Arts Lab will begin in early March 2024 and end all in-person activities by mid-December 2024.
– – – During most of the fellowship, participants will generally gather four times per month. Each week will either contain a Wednesday cohort meeting with Rubén Polendo (3p-6p) or a Wednesday training session with guest artists (3p-6p) in Brooklyn. These will begin on Wednesday, March 13th 2024.
– – – Each participant will receive six exploratory weeks with shared use of MITU580 and shared access to the venue’s lighting, audio, video equipment, and software. The first three-week studio period for each fellow will be July 8-28, 2024. The second three-week studio period will be October 22nd – November 10th 2024.
– – – The cohort will culminate the second period of studio time by presenting a series of in-process studio visits for our community that will take place between November 12th – 15th, 2024.

– – – Perspective applicants should be available for short interviews between February 12th – 24th, 2024.
