POSITION TITLE:  Adjunct faculty to teach a graduate course in: Data Visualization and Storytelling
Description of course from Wagner website: In our increasingly data-reliant and data-saturated society, people who understand how to leverage data to generate insights have the power to change the world. Data visualization and storytelling is a crucial skill for policy and data analysts, communications and marketing professionals, and managers and decision-makers within nonprofits, social organizations and the government. With the advent of visualization tools that do not require coding, data storytelling in the digital age is also an attainable skill set for people with varying levels of technical ability.

This hands-on introductory course will teach students how to develop meaningful data stories that reveal visual insights accessible for relevant audiences. Students will also learn the basics of Tableau, the industry standard in data visualization tools, to make sense of and visualize publicly available data. Students will leave the course with a portfolio of data visualization projects, analog and digital, that demonstrate the application of data storytelling. This course is intended for a beginner in data visualization and storytelling. Students with extensive prior experience should consult the instructor before enrolling.
The course has been developed and a syllabus and previous course materials are available. Instructors can teach the course as-is or make slight adjustments (to be approved by the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs). The course is 1.5-credits, will be taught in person, and will run on Thursdays from 6:45-8:25pm in the first half of the term (1/27-3/10). The course has a separate lab immediately following (from 8:35-10:15pm) that a TA can be hired to cover or it could be taught by the same instructor as the lecturer for additional compensation. Compensation for the lecture is $2,500.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Attend all class sessions on time and lead class activities, exercises, discussions and lectures
• Use the University’s online course management system to post materials, collect and provide feedback on assignments, communicate with students, and other activities
• Observe and evaluate student performance through assignments, projects, discussions, and examinations; provide feedback in a timely manner on student progress; assign final grades
• Be available to students through office hours or scheduled appointments via Zoom or in person
• Work with the faculty program director or specialization head and administrators on assessing and enhancing the course and the larger program or specialization
• Request feedback from students and colleagues and respond to it by adapting teaching style, incorporating new elements, etc.
• Participate in the new adjunct orientation process.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Advanced degree: PhD, MPA, JD, MA, MBA, etc.
• At least 4-5 years of professional experience with data visualization using Tableau.
• Classroom teaching experience in higher ed strongly preferred.

• Demonstrate command of the subject matter: Impart key theories, principles, and elements of the topic area, stay up-to-date on advances and developments in the field, use instructional strategies appropriate to the topic
• Create an effective learning environment: Implement course syllabus; engage students by fostering participation and encouraging critical thinking; teach to different learning styles, backgrounds, and degrees of professional experience; promote growth and development; use technology to enhance learning
• Organize course materials and assignments: Establish clear deadlines and timelines, create unambiguous messaging, provide explicit assignment guidelines and grading parameters, use technology to promote transparency and clarity
• Engage in continuous learning: Reflect on one’s practice, solicit and respond constructively to feedback, identify opportunities to learn more about teaching and subject matter, connect with colleagues in peer learning as available.
