Bell Labs HCI research position:
=93Augmented Objects for a DiY Internet-of-Things=94
For the Ambient Media department of the Bell =
Labs research
division of Alcatel-Lucent
(Antwerp, Be=
lgium), we are looking for a Senior Researcher in Physical Computing.
=
The Ambient Media department in Bell-Labs focuses on cre=
ating new Application Concepts
and Application Creation E=
nvironments for so- called “ambient” applications in which the userinterface=
and application intelligence (HW & SW) are distribut=
ed over (and incorporated in) the
environment. The depart=
ment performs multi-disciplinary research (combining human sciences,

design & computer science) to realize the vision of an open =
technology standard, eco-system
and marketplace for user-=
created Internet- of-Things applications. We believe that nontechnical
users can be empowered to create (both physically as=
=93programmatically=94)
their own Do-it-Yourself =
Internet-of-Things applications.
The research encompasses both

software creation paradigms and platforms as smart objects as inte=
raction means in the
creation/consumption process. The www.touchatag.com venture is a spin=
-off of our previous
research.
=
In the =
spirit of open innovation, we are leading the European Do-it-Yourself Smart =
Experiences
(www.dys=
e.org
) consortium that collaborates to realize precisely this vision of =
an open Internetof-
Things for the people.

We are looking for a Senior Researcher in HCI who:

=B7 Is curious on how non-technical users could create their own smart Inter=
net-of-Things
experiences
=B7 Wants to=
explore the concept of intuitive Ambient Programming
=B7=
Is eager to work in a multi-disciplinary team (sociologist, computer scient=
ists, designers,
usability expert, creativity coach and m=
arketeer are already onboard)
=B7 Wants to create. Is act=
ive in prototype design & development (both conceptual, HW and

SW).
=B7 Wants to conduct research in the domai=
n of physical computing & smart objects, from
=
concept=
ualisation, HW & SW prototyping up to writing patents & publications=
.
=B7 Has experience in Media, Human-Computer Interaction=
(preferably in the domain of
ubiquitous computing), incl=
uding active development of demonstrators. Strong affinity
with advanced media applications technology and usage.
=
=B7 Has solid experience in at least one of the following domains:

o Human-Computer Interaction (preferably in the domains of Physica=
l Computing,
Tangible User Interfaces, Smart Objects, sen=
sors, rapid prototyping, Interactive
Spaces, =85)

o Ambient intelligence technologies
=B7 Wants=
to deepen and apply this expertise in the context of the Bell Labs environm=

Your application will be treated confidentially.
