Data Mining Scientist
We’re looking for an engineer or applied scientist with experience implementing data mining and machine learning systems to help build an innovative online education system that adapts to each individual student.
What we need from you:
- Passion and enthusiasm for building scalable systems that analyze huge data sets and make actionable recommendations
- Proven ability to identify relationships within large, not obviously related data sets
- Ability to work with incomplete or imperfect data
- Familiarity with linear algebra and manipulating data using matrix algorithms
- Ability to build and interpret probabilistic models of complex, high-dimensional systems
Using any of following technologies:
- Collaborative filtering
- Decision trees (and automatic tree generation)
- Bayesian methods
- Clustering techniques (principal components analysis, k-means, etc.)
What we’d like from you:
- Hadoop or other MapReduce implementation experience
- Semantic text mining or natural language processing experience
- Experience in high-stakes information retrieval and statistical analysis – (i.e. Bioinformatics, Fraud Detection)

Statistician
We are looking for a talented Statistician who can help us transform our reams of raw data into products that make our students learn better and faster. If this gets you excited, we want you on our team.
You’ll join a bright and motivated team working on the cutting edge of education software. You must have 2-4 years of experience in statistical work, bioinformatics, educational measurement or a related area. You’ll work with a diverse toolkit that ranges from simple data aggregation via statistical analysis to complex data mining, and provide expert interpretation of results. You’ll design, develop, implement and maintain an analysis toolset for use in creating real world solutions.
Responsibilities:
- Import, clean, transform, validate or model data in order to generate reasonable and educationally useful inferences.
- Execute complex analyses of data and explain them in simple terms.
- Create presentations or detailed reports on data.
- Present findings and implications of findings.
What we need from you:
- Experience in applied statistics, including regression, multivariate analyses and clustering techniques.
- Strong analytic skills.
- Strong communication skills – written and verbal.
- Experience in data analysis and problem solving with large amounts of data.
- Competence with statistical analysis programs (R, Mplus, SAS, SPSS, STATA, or other).
- Ability to synthesize information from multiple resources.
- Ability to understand the strengths, weaknesses, and limitation of given datasets or metrics.
- Ability to present data graphically for a non-technical audience.
What we’d like from you:
- Familiarity with MySQL.
