The New York City Department of Housing Preserv=
ation and Development=92s (HPD) Office of Chief of Staff, Policy Research an=
d Program Evaluation Group is seeking a student intern with proven=
experience applying GIS technology to answer research questions. The positi=

Agency Background
=
HPD is a mayoral agency whose primary responsibilities include the c=
reation of new affordable housing units; the preservation of existing units =
in the City=92s housing stock; and the enforcement of the City=92s Housing M=
aintenance Code. The agency h=
as close to 3,000 employees and is led by Commissioner Rafael Cestero. It is in the middle of an ambitiou=
s ten-year plan to create or preserve 165,000 new units of affordable housin=

Policy Research and Program Evaluation Group Background
The Policy Research and Program Evaluation Group=
designs and executes broader studies of current housing policy issues as we=
ll as targeted outcome evaluations of HPD programs. The student intern would=
be a part of the research and program evaluation team.
Position Description
A Multimedia intern will work with Policy Research team membe=
rs to communicate statistically-derived data to a general audience using map=
s, charts, graphs, and diagrams. He or she will assist in the production of data visualization, highlight=
ing data trends and patterns in support of the New Housing Marketplace Plan.=
Tasks will include developing interactive features with Flash and research =
tasks associated with housing-related data.
Candidates must have a=
strong, demonstrable interest in urban studies and experience in a variety =
of multimedia technologies including Flash, Photoshop, HTML and XML. An unde=
rstanding of how to integrate databases into multimedia presentations, knowl=
edge of Flash AS2 and AS3 scripting, CSS implementation. and a familiarity w=
ith JavaScript frameworks and libraries are all extremely desirable.
