What’s the project? Ushahidi for NYC urban design improvement ideas with the Institute for Urban Design (IfUD), for an contest & event funded by the Rockefeller foundation.
Where & for which users? NYC, all residents
When does this need to be developed? ASAP, for phase 1 launch in late March.
Who are we looking to hire? A civic minded, frontend and backend developer w/ PHP/Ushahidi experience. — [Breaking March 2nd update: for PPS’s website we’re now also looking for a part time developer with WordPress experience.]

Developer Scope Outline:
Phase1– Install and Upgrade: take existing UX modifications (as on http://pps.org/placemap/tupelo and http://pps.org/placemap/baltimore ) and apply them to the latest version of Ushahidi.
– Modify UX and backend for altered questions, e.g. adding rating scale question.
– Making the comment and comment voting UX more emphatic and sized for best usability.
– Optimizing the server to handle peak loads
– Enabling the multiple-geometries input option.
– Set up of SMS and configuration for questionnaire flow
– Modification of report/list and/or map views, to allow for area-specific list view of items in that area.Phase 2:
– Development of Design Submission View: designer submits design based on user suggestion/need/outcome in phase 1, as submission come in the public can openly view and browse design submissions on a map and list view.
General Project Description:
“By the City, For the City” will set the groundwork for Urban Design Week’s September 15 kick-off, the IfUD with PPS tools will launch a two-part, public ideas competition:
- In the first phase, we will ask New Yorkers to share their ideas about where the greatest opportunities are for improvement in their neighborhood and borough
- The second phase will involve an international call for architects, planners, students, landscape architects, and other design professionals to choose one of the submitted sites and submit a brief proposal
PPS will adapt its (Ushahidi based) PlaceMap application for both phase one and phase two usage.
- Phase one work will consist of:
- Design and modification of the PlaceMap
- Up to 3 hours of advisement on social media outreach for citizen participation (email, blogging, social networks). Time beyond this at PPS’s discretion.
- Production and deployment of the PlaceMap website on either PPS’s hosting environment or on the IfUD’s. Use of various mobile interface additions, beyond Twitter and the existing Ushahidi mobile App will be at the discretion of PPS.
- Phase two work will consist of:
- Collaboration with the IfUD’s design team to modify the PlaceMap or PlaceMap data for display of design submissions.
- Up to 2 hours of advisement on social media outreach for design submissions (email, blogging, social networks). Time beyond this at PPS’s discretion.
All product code for this will remain Open Source under the existing LGPL software licenses.
