CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Design, Development and Research 2012

Underlying any form of creative activity is the concept of design. This is underscored by the current emphasis on design
research and design thinking. Yet, whenever one asks a designer to explain design, they reply with some version of the
“Addie” (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model. And while everybody is happy with
describing the whole Addie process, very few people stop to think what actually happens in that “black box” called
“Design”. Similarly when people talk about design research, they often concentrate too much on the process or the
product, and too little on the underlying concepts and theories. The dilemma is to discover what actually makes it
research. This conference runs on six tracks namely Design, Development, Research, Dilemma, ICT for Development and
Instructional Design (Education).
Papers, posters and proposals for workshops, symposia and panel discussions are invited for the second Design,
Development and Research conference to be held on the Bellville Campus of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology,
Cape Town, South Africa.
All the accepted papers will appear in the Conference Proceedings, published online. Papers are peer-reviewed and
published for accreditation according to the requirements of the South African Department of Higher Education and
Training (DHET). Papers of high quality will be submitted in a modified version to be published in special issues of certain
peer-reviewed journals.
Submission of papers (Dates are not final as yet and could possibly be extended):
* Submission of Abstracts (±500 words): 28th March 2012
* Notification of abstract acceptance: 11th April 2012
