[JOB] Johnson & Johnson Design Research Manager Search

We are working on an exciting search for a Design Research Manager for the Cross-Sector Innovation & Design Group at Johnson & Johnson. Depending on the candidates that are identified for the search, it is possible that the role could be elevated to a director-level position. Can you think of anyone who would be interested in learning more about this opportunity?

The J&J Cross-Sector Innovation and Design team was created about five years ago to help J&J create and develop more leading-edge designs for both consumer products and medical devices.  The in-house studio is structured like a creative consultancy within J&J and is led by former member of the core faculty at the Media Design Program (MDP) at Art Center College of Design.  The group approaches design through qualitative research into patients’ unmet needs, improving patient experiences through a human-centered approach to the design of new devices and user experiences. The group focuses on designing tools to inculcate better habits and devices that empower individuals with chronic illness to better manage their health and wellness.

The Design Research Manager will participate in strategic design research in product development and UI/UX across a wide range of projects including but not limited to healthcare.  The role will be for a hands-on manager who analyzes research and synthesizes it into potential solutions that are both conceptually rigorous and actionable. Based on what the objective is for a particular user device/experience, this person will develop research that will determine how J&J would create the experience, and what would the various parts of that experience include, from the doctor’s office to the home. Additionally, this individual will be a key contributor to the various stages in the development cycle of a product, including contributing to clinical and marketing trials, as well as analyzing the results of such trials.

The appropriate candidate must have a strong focus on behavior design, and a keen understanding of how to utilize behavior and product design as catalysts for creating tools to help better people’s lives. An openness to new methods and technologies is key.  Experience in healthcare is a plus, but ability to work across a range of sectors is a must.  Experience in design research, data visualization and prototyping are required.  This individual must have the ability to scope out a project, to build strategic presentation, and to adjust and adapt to shifting expectations and design specs as development unfolds.

The candidate will report up to a senior manager and must be able to view multiple projects simultaneously from a strategic and over-arching perspective down to the day-to-day. As such, communication skills are essential – the candidate must ultimately be able to articulate value, viability, and feasibility of any given project. They will be expected to participate and lead key presentations internally across disciplines and externally with partners.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience.  The position is based in New York.
