We are told we are living in The Age of Big Data. But what exactly is Big Data? Why does it matter? How can those who donʼt speak “code” understand this new frontier?

Big Data Society (BDS) aggregates, curates and collates content generated by this new and diverse field, provides an accessible point of entry for all those curious about the social impact of Big Data through shared resources, articles, white papers, profiles, courses, partnerships and events.

Communications Internship

Position Description
Big Data Society seeks an intern to assist with the development and implementation of online marketing communications to build the Big Data Society brand and network. Your work with us will require you to both learn industry practices and contribute ideas during all phases of projects. Internship requires a weekly commitment of 15 hrs or two days a week. This is an unpaid internship position with growth opportunities. College credit can be applied.

Desired Skills
The ideal candidate should have a strong interest in Big Data, data science and journalism, possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills, have strong attention to detail, a rigorous work ethic, and experience with blogging and/or social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and experience with platforms to manage multiple social media accounts. Excellent research and organizational skills are required.

Previous experience in Marketing, PR and Social Media a plus but not a requirement. Candidate must have a strong interest to learn new skill sets, best practices online, be a team player and thrive in a fastpaced creative environment. Intern will have the opportunity to work closely with the co-founders of the Big Data Society and be a part of an exciting and rapidly growing field. Responsibilities will include online research, maintaining the Big Data Society blog, editorial calendar, coordination of interviews, maintaining active presence on social media networks, assisting with communications, compiling research into reports and materials, liaison with graphic designer as needed, prepping email marketing activities and updating the organization planning schedule and database. Knowledge of iWork, Microsoft Office, Photoshop, WordPress, MailChimp, Tumblr. Start date, immediately. Schedule is two days a week. Office located in the thriving digital community in DUMBO Brooklyn at 20 Jay Street close to the F Train at York St and A, C, E at High St. No phone calls please.
