Web Developer, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters, and to victims of armed conflict, irrespective of race, religion, creed or political convictions. When medical assistance is not enough to save lives, MSF will speak out against human rights abuses and violations of humanitarian law its teams witness while providing medical relief.
Under the direction and supervision of the Web Manager &Strategist, and in collaboration with the full web & publications team, the Web Developer upkeeps and maintains MSF USA’s Drupal website, implements site code and module updates, and builds pages, applications and mini-sites for the organization. S/he also provides technical support for the development, maintenance, and coordination of the multi-site, multi-lingual Drupal content management system (CMS), used by MSF USA and the international MSF movement.
The Web Applications Developer also facilitates the publishing of content to meet the needs of various departments and groups at MSF-USA, including communications, fundraising, program, human resources recruitment, the Association, and the Board of Directors, in order to promote awareness of MSF’s activities, concerns, expertise, needs, and values.
Responsibilities:
MSF USA DRUPAL DEVELOPMENT AND CONTENT MANAGEMENT (70%)
Performs content updates and site administration and maintenance for the public website, the Association site, and the Wiki; trains staff on using the Drupal CMS; develops new Drupal content types and custom site functionality; monitors site traffic and ensures optimum performance and security; implement/code designs from Photoshop or similar design files
INTERNATIONAL CONTENT STORE AND SHARED CMS MANAGEMENT (20%)
In collaboration with the international admin group, assists in the maintenance, growth, expansion of features, and technical support for the multisite Drupal platform of which MSF USA is a part; performs platform testing, updates/upgrades, backups as needed; manages code changes and Git repository
PLANNING (5%)
Contributes technical knowledge to help determine and implement key objectives for MSF on the web.
DEPARTMENTAL, INTERDEPARTMENTAL and INTERNATIONAL COORDINATION (5%)
Attends staff meetings and office-wide debates to brainstorm solutions and participate in information sharing across all departments.
Qualifications:
Must be proficient in the use of the following:
- HTML5, CSS
- PHP
- Javascript, JQuery and relevant plugins
- Git and version control systems, Drush, Unix command line and Deployment Workflow
- Apache Server
- MySQL or similar database integration with a CMS
- Drupal Core and Major Modules: Views, Panels, Taxonomy, Blocks, Fields, Entities, Menus, Views Slideshow, Display Suite
Must be familiar with some or all of these Drupal related workflows and technologies:
- Advanced Site Building (Page Manager, CTools Access plugins, Variants and selection rules, Contexts & Views Contexts, Contextual Administration)
- Hand-coded Drupal Theming (HTML5/CSS3)
- Drupal Coding & Essential APIs: Form API & Drupal Hook System
- Drupal Contrib API: Views API, Secure Coding, Standards and Best Practices
Must have:
- Minimum 4 years relevant work experience, plus Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Outstanding, proven time management and organizational skills, keen attention to detail.
- Creativity and initiative when approaching work and projects
- Ability to work independently, move projects from conceptual stages to launch, and handle multiple and often competing deadlines.
- Ability to communicate effectively both within office and with web masters and others from MSF offices in other countries.
- Ability to handle a large volume of work.
- Ability to write routine business correspondence, and internal memos.
Preferred:
- Experience using Adobe Photoshop; Fireworks a plus
- Experience with Google Analytics (especially campaigns, eCommerce, and event tracking)
- Knowledge of Cloud Server hosting or Acquia hosting.
- Knowledge of DAM.
- Participation in the Drupal community and awareness of changes to Drupal core.
- Ability to build custom contributed Drupal modules to extend site functionality
- Knowledge of Mobile First Design and Responsive Web Design
Conditions:
- Salary – high 60s- low 70s, commensurate with experience.
