Location: New York City, NY, US
The Digital Design group at The New York Times seeks a well-balanced hybrid designer/front-end developer. Candidates will be able to conceive and execute prototypes for web experiences and applications – as well as craft production-ready code – throughout the design process, in close collaboration with the rest of the design team. This person will also be expected to work with reporters, editors, producers, and developers across The Times to conceive and produce multimedia features for both product and news presentations, across multiple platforms.
The ideal candidate will have experience making sharp web and mobile sites, and possess a well-rounded, visually-exceptional portfolio that includes examples of well-crafted, cleanly-coded, and elegant experiences.
Requirements:
– Strong visual and interactive design skills – a clear grasp of typography, layout, color, motion, and behavior.
– A practical, pragmatic innovator whose solutions elicit responses that justify the effort and investment.
– Ability to meet deadlines and to adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news production environment.
– Experience working collaboratively with members of a mixed-media team.
– A keen interest in and knowledge of NYTimes.com’s competitors, both in the United States and abroad.
– Expertise in client-site Web development with HTML, CSS, Javascript and modern JS libraries such as: jQuery, Underscore, Backbone, and templating libraries.
– Experience with mobile web development techniques, best practices and platform quirks.
– Familiarity with collaborative tools (GitHub, Make, etc.)
– Experience with HTML5 audio & video, as well as server-side languages, such as PHP, Ruby and Node, is considered a plus.
– Another plus: familiarity with high-volume publishing workflows and environments.
In addition to exhibiting excellent skill and taste in crafting interactive experiences, candidates must be curious, thoughtful, collaborative, personable, organized, attentive to detail and possess strong verbal and presentation skills. Enthusiasm – for designing and making great products and experiences, for current events and The New York Times – is essential. Original, flexible, critical thinkers who communicate and collaborate well with a wide range of contributors will thrive. Design team members are expected not only to make exceptional contributions to the design of our products, but to engage with others to foster an environment of learning and constructive dialogue about our work.
Applications without links to portfolios/work samples will not be considered.
