The Director of the Museum must be a passionate and energetic person with the ability to succeed in accomplishing multiple tasks simultaneously. S/he must have business management skills and be a team leader and have the ability to promote the museum’s collection with diverse audiences and to build and relationships for this new museum in Los Angeles. S/he must have exceptional communications skills in the promotion of the integrity of the collection to a new audience in America as well as business management skills.
The Museum of Broken Relationships in Los Angeles grew out of a museum in Zagreb as well as from international traveling exhibitions revolving around the concept of failed relationships and their ruins. Unlike ‘destructive’ self-help instructions for recovery from failed loves, the Museum offers a chance to overcome an emotional collapse through creation: by contributing to the Museum’s collection. Conceptualized in Croatia, it has since toured internationally. This is the first permanent museum location outside of Croatia.
Specific Responsibilities:
• Astounding opportunity to curate and oversee the overall direction in opening a new and exciting cultural museum in Los Angeles, California.
• Supervise the design team in developing the first U.S. Branch of an international museum and all management functions relating to the operation of a business, including handling receipts.
• Managerial duties include hiring and supervision of up to 10 museum staff and dealing with vendors.
• Organize design plans, including staffing and stock for an onsite bookstore and coffee shop and management of same on an ongoing basis.
• Promote systems for donations of exhibits from the public via website, curate the collection and display of an international collection.
• Build an audience for the Museum’s programs to meet the interests and needs of diverse audiences.
• Oversee promotional plans using social media with strong online presence.
• Oversee the management and growth of the museum’s collections.
• Organize storage systems for items not on display.
Candidates will possess:
• Background in art history or related field, and experience in development/ management of a cultural museum collection or archive, a plus.
• Management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
• Desire to provide effective vision and integrity in the preservation and display of the collection.
• Skills to manage promotion, collection and maintenance of the incoming donations to the collection.
• Organizational skills necessary to mount exhibitions, draft online publications, present tours and lectures.
• Ability to work effectively with staff and a wide variety of museum supporters, visitors, members, and volunteers.
