STEM Robotics Instructor (PT)
Science Camp at Liberty Science Center is seeking 2 highly motivated and qualified technology
instructors to teach 2 weeks of robotics summer camps. Monday to Friday; August 8 through 19, 2016
Position Overview:
The STEM Robotics Instructor at Liberty Science Center is responsible for delivering engaging lab-based
STEM enriched technology workshops to varied ages of campers. The Instructor will clearly
communicate learning objectives to campers using established curriculum, adapting teaching methods
and instructional materials to meet the campers' varying needs. The STEM Robotics Instructor must have
knowledge in a variety of engineering techniques, equipment, terminology, and vocabulary. The ideal
candidate is energetic, engaging, innovative, team-oriented, and an expert at communicating with kids.
Essential Functions
Prepare lab spaces and teach sequential skill-building lesson plans
Use established curriculum becoming competent to instruct assigned technology camp
Establish good rapport with students and parents that motivates participation and engagement.
Classroom management
Encourage and coach students in scientific and engineering methods working toward a
culminating project through active engagement.
Manage and secure technology equipment
Organize course materials, properly packing and storing at end of camp week
Attend weekly Staff Meetings
Assist in daily camp wide activities, other duties
Be a positive role model for campers and staff in helping to create an inclusive camp culture
Ensure the safe operation and instruction of the camp activities in accordance with Liberty
Science Center policies and procedures.
Requirements
Familiarity of LEGO Mindstorms | FIRST Robotics Competition experience would be a plus
Comfort troubleshooting coding and equipment on the fly
Must have prior experience successfully teaching and instructing youth
Knowledge of educational pedagogies
Work Environment
Liberty Science Center is located in a beautiful state park in Jersey City with easy access to free parking,
the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, and the NJ Path train. All employees have access to an on-site café, a
terrace with stunning NYC views, and on-site yoga. The STEM Robotics Instructor will work in both low-
light and natural light. The Instructor will work 75% of the time in on-site classrooms delivering camp
curriculum and 25% of the time assisting with camp wide and recreational activities helping to create an
inclusive camp community and preparing the classroom for upcoming workshop deliveries.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to
successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
The STEM Robotics Instructor will stand for long periods of time and maneuver through museum
crowds. They will demonstrate proficiency operating LSC technology. The ability to work with moderate
to high noise level and lift 30 lbs. will be necessary.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a seasonal Part Time position. Candidate must be available to work Mon through Fri from 8:30
AM to 4:30 PM; August 8 through 19, 2016.
Education and Experience
Associate /B.A/B.S. in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering, or related field preferred.
Experience teaching or tutoring STEM courses
Proficient at finding solutions to problems
Demonstrate an understanding of child development and developmentally appropriate
practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with robotics competitions
Experience with computer science
