JOB: Sculpture and Emerging Technologies Faculty Position @ the University of Maryland

Position opening at the University of Maryland Department of Art:
Assistant Professor in Sculpture and Emerging Technologies

The Department of Art at the University of Maryland invites applications for an Assistant Professor, full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Sculpture and Emerging Technologies to begin in August 2017. We are seeking candidates whose scholarly and creative research interests meld contemporary sculpture concepts with emerging new-media practices. We seek a candidate engaged in the investigation and invention of new means in which technology augments and influences the theory and practice of sculpture and is someone who embraces hybridity in theory and practice in an expanded field. These areas may include, but are not limited to: digital fabrication, physical computing, generative and parametric practices, installation practices, materiality, the built environment, and kinetic or other time-based approaches.

We are in the formative stages of several forward-looking collaborative initiatives within the University of Maryland community. These include our recent partnership with the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., and our involvement in the development of numerous cross-disciplinary fabrication, entrepreneurial, and making spaces across the campus. The successful candidate should be able to provide direction in the trajectory of these initiatives in addition to maintaining an active and visible practice of scholarly or creative research; teaching undergraduate courses; mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in the Department; engaging in service at the department, college and university level; and advising in the development of undergraduate curriculum and facilities enhancement within the Department of Art.

The Department of Art is committed to increasing the diversity of the campus community. Candidates who have experience working with a diverse range of faculty, staff, and students, and who can contribute to the climate of inclusivity are encouraged to identify their experiences in these areas. The University of Maryland is an equal opportunity employer. Minorities and women are encouraged to apply. This search is contingent upon the continued availability of funds.

Teaching responsibilities include 4 undergraduate courses per year plus interaction with the graduate program.

Required Qualifications:
● An MFA or equivalent terminal degree
● Demonstrable investment in the uses and implications of emerging technologies in the field of sculpture.
