JOB: Visiting Assistant Arts Professor, IMA, NYU Shanghai

NYU Shanghai is seeking to hire Assistant Arts Faculty (non tenure-track) to join its program in Interactive Media Arts. IMA, (https://shanghai.nyu.edu/academics/majors/interactive-media), an undergraduate liberal arts program in the practice and theory of interactive media. IMA is one of the inaugural majors at NYU’s Shanghai campus, with 300 enrollments a term and 80 declared majors. Positions are for 1 semester or 1 year, with the possibility of renewal.

IMA combines practice-based work with critical scholarship in order to explore the social and cultural possibilities of emerging media. Our studio curriculum combines the development of software, the manipulation of digital media, the fabrication of material objects, and the construction of virtual and physical spaces. Our seminars relate to theoretical study of the history, philosophy, and politics of new media.

Compensation and terms of employment are comparable to U.S. institutions, and include faculty housing or subsidies.

Assistant Arts Faculty will teach two courses per semester, usually one core and one elective, which can be a production class or seminar. In addition, they will advise students, and participate in departmental and school-wide committees. On-going professional work is encouraged. Teaching experience, a commitment to undergraduate education, and enthusiastic dedication to this rapidly evolving program are essential.

The core classes required of IMA majors are our foundation courses (Interaction Lab http://ima.nyu.sh/interaction-lab/ and Communications Lab http://ima.nyu.sh/communications-lab/), a research-based seminar, and our Senior Capstone Studio.

Elective courses have included: Animation: Traditional Techniques & Contemporary Practices, Collaborative Design, Collective Methods, Creating Immersive Worlds, Developing Web, Expressing Data, Introduction to Robotics, Making Maker Education, Paper Arts, Rapid Prototyping, Shanghai StreetFood and Urban Farming, Solar Solutions: Considering the Sun in our Digital Futures, Talking Fabrics, Unmanned Aerial Storytelling, and User Experience Design.

IMA’s student population is drawn from dozens of countries, and especially from China. Strong consideration will be given to faculty who have worked outside the United States, or in institutions with international student populations.

Candidates should have a terminal degree and published work in a discipline related to the theory and practice of digital creation, or creative experience with publicly shown work in related fields, and at least one year of undergraduate teaching experience.

Candidates should submit a letter of application, illustrative publications or documentation of public work, a curriculum vitae, and the names of two references who have agreed to submit reference letters upon request.
