The Mayor’s Office for Economic Opportunity works to reduce poverty and broaden opportunity by advancing the use of data and evidence in program and policy design, service delivery, and budget decisions.

An apprenticeship with our team is an opportunity to grow your expertise in product development and management, design, digital services, or public policy and help improve the lives of millions of New Yorkers. We are currently seeking students with an interest in these disciplines: product management, data visualization, design, public policy, or social impact.  
 
Apprenticeships are project-based, part-time, and usually last 2-3 months with a minimum of two consecutive days per week. Projects will focus on the delivery, on-going success, and continuous improvement of government services.
Product Apprenticeship:
Based on your skills and interests, responsibilities will include:
  • Assist in the creation of research plans and frameworks.
  • Assist in the preparation and facilitation of user interviews, usability testing and workshops, including note taking and setup.
  • Assist with research synthesis to generate insights and inform design decisions. Participate in design and strategy workshops.
  • Assist in the creation of prototypes, design assets, and project documentation.
  • Create simple webpages and HTML/CSS-based email templates.
  • Collaborate in the creation of product development and management documents, including roadmaps and user stories.
 
Design Apprenticeship:
Based on your skills and interests, responsibilities will include:

  • Assist in the creation of prototypes, design assets, and project documentation.
  • Create graphic assets for the office and products.
  • Assist in the creation of research plans and frameworks.
  • Assist in the preparation and facilitation of user interviews, usability testing and workshops, including note taking and setup.
  • Assist with research synthesis to generate insights and inform design decisions.
  • Participate in design and strategy workshops.
Skills We’re Seeking:
  • Commitment to the mission of advancing greater equality and opportunity through human-centered design practices in government.
  • Design in any/all of the following practices: user experience, human-centered design, interaction design, user research, data visualization, and service design.
  • Prototyping user experiences skills through web development using: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and front-end development frameworks.
  • Turning user research insights into actionable insights and materials, such as user experience flows.
  • Technical and design fluency and organization to support product vision and development.
  • Interest in using plain language to help residents access and interact with government services.
