Result of Service

The successful candidate will be responsible for conceptualizing, developing and producing animations for the various events. This will require the following activities:

Pre-production:
• Coordinate with the event organizer to get the key messages
• Create a story board
• Work with an editor to get the story text
• Develop the branding/style
• Search for the music and sounds and procure it
• Look for voice-over candidate
• Record the voice-over

Production
• Design the layout
• Animate in synch with the voice-over and music
• Get feedback and adjust
• Export in multiple formats for various medium

Distribute
• Coordinate with the event organizer on the distribution
• Coordinate with the OCHA social media team on the distribution

In addition to animations, the candidate will support development of guidelines and templates for the revamped OCHA information products. The materials will be distributed and used by our field colleagues for the coming years. This will require the following activities:

• Analyse OCHA’s current information products and look how to transform the print materials into digital assets
• Evaluate various tools that will enable OCHA to modernize its information products and provide suggestions
• Test out with field colleagues on the tools
• Develop guidelines and digital templates on how to use the tools
• Develop training materials and provide training

Duties and Responsibilities

The Design and Multimedia Unit (DMU) of the Strategic Communications Branch (SCB) leads the development of OCHA’s visual information services and products. In particular, the unit provides support in the development of promotional materials for key high-level events. The events the unit is regularly engaged in include: World Humanitarian Day (19 August), the Global Humanitarian Overview (December), the ECOSOC humanitarian affairs segment (June) and other emergency-specific high-level conferences.

We would like to engage the services of a graphic and motion designer to develop animations that will be used to highlight these events via social media as well as projected during the event itself. In
addition, the graphic and motion designer will also be responsible for other special animation projects that will highlight emerging and ongoing crises where OCHA is called to operate.

The graphic and motion designer will also develop templates and guidelines and provide training so that the social media team can learn to develop their own materials in the future. There are currently no interactive and digital designers in OCHA nor at the United Nations that fit the skills that is required for the position as it a very specialized expertise.

The DMU is working on revamping OCHA’s visual identity in 2018. This will include development of guidelines and training materials for the field colleagues for the visual and reporting materials. The selected candidate will support the development of those materials especially in the areas of digital
content and help OCHA to transition from print products to more digital.

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: First level university degree in animation, graphic design, digital, web development or related field. Technical training in Adobe CC suite particularly AfterEffects, Photoshop and Illustrator is desirable.

Experience: A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in animation, interactive design, information and communication technology, social media, or related area. Experience with Adobe software, including Adobe After Effects, Illustrator, Indesign and Photoshop is required. Experience with development of templates and guidelines on digital tools is an advantage.

Language: Fluency in English is required (both oral and written). Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage, especially French or Arabic.
