Full-time, Assistant Manager of Digital and Analog Machining

Parsons School of Design seeks an Assistant Manager of Digital and Analog Machining. This position is responsible for planning, oversight, and daily operation of CNC and traditional machining resources that are a part of the Making Center. Primary facilities covered include two CNC routing and milling facilities, one of which also has traditional machining tools, a resin casting room, and an air-brush room.

The Assistant Manager will be responsible for managing the L3 Machine Shop and the E2 CNC Shop . They will lead or facilitate regular equipment maintenance to keep tools in working order and minimize downtime. They will also organize learning resources, create lab use learning materials, and provide student and faculty orientations to ensure proper safety and procedure training for all users who wish to access the shops. The Associate Manager will help connect the digital and analog machining processes to the other digital and analog making resources at Parsons, and help align processes, workflows, and trainings that facilitate an open and accessible learning environment. They will train and oversee technicians and student staff who directly interact with the students and faculty using the shops. This position will be primarily front-facing, providing direct interactions with students and faculty in support of curricular needs, but will also include administrative and managerial tasks. Ideal candidates would be highly organized, self motivated, and possess strong interpersonal and collaborative skills. This position reports to the Associate Director of Systems Support in the Making Center and will work collaboratively with the Assistant Manager of Digital Tools (who oversees the 3D printing and laser cutting resources).

Responsibilities:
Provide and maintain a safe working environment for students, faculty and staff.

Supervise and enforce policies for use of the making facilities by students, faculty, and staff.

Support and maintain multiple fabrication related services, with focus on CNC and traditional machining as well as some resin casting.
Lead internal maintenance and/or arrange for third party maintenance of machines/facilities.

Organize software & hardware updates as needed.

Manage student CNC milling submissions for staff run equipment.

Manage system of tracking facility/equipment usage

Coordinate technician and student worker schedules to support the facility schedule

Organize trainings for students and faculty, including scheduling, maintaining public calendars, and tracking attendance.

Support learning objectives as established by academic leadership, in support of curriculum, during facility open working hours.

Oversee updating of lab websites.

Train and oversee technicians and student staff.

Create clear, accurate, user-friendly documentation and instructions for all equipment/processes.

Provide technology support for Parsons-wide technology initiatives and events as they arise.

Manage inventory oversight and ordering of materials and supplies.

Maintain a budget through planning and tracking purchases through each fiscal year cycle

Work collaboratively with shops/labs to help improve the student experience through streamlining policies and trainings

Help identify common issues or deficiencies across Making Center resources and work with the Making Center team to find solutions
Attend field related conferences, staying current with technology.

Attend regularly scheduled Making Center staff meetings and trainings
Maintain appropriate trainings, records, and SDS inventory as required by the University Health and Safety officer.

Work with the Associate Manager of Systems Support and School Leadership in longer term planning of facilities and equipment improvements to continue to meet changing curricular needs.
