Job Description:
The Department of Art & Visual Culture at Spelman College invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in Art. The ideal candidate will have experience with traditional and contemporary art-making practices that embrace three-dimensional art, technology, collaboration, and interdisciplinarity. An M.F.A. in studio art or related fields is required. Two or more years teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level is also required. Applicants are expected to be well-versed in teaching critical theories and methodologies in art making such as critical race theory, gender and sexuality theory, post-colonial theory, or de-colonial strategies.
The appointment requires a 3/3 teaching load, including introductory and advanced level courses for materials and concepts, installation art, and overseeing senior thesis projects and the annual exhibition.
Additional responsibilities include maintaining a well-articulated research and exhibition agenda, service to the department, which would include mentoring students, service the Division of the Arts and the College. The application deadline is midnight February 22, 2019.
The Department of Art & Visual Culture offers majors and minors in art, art history, documentary filmmaking and photography, as well as a minor in curatorial studies. It encourages creative work that engages a variety of aesthetic and intellectual fields and social contexts, which expand the breadth of conventional art practices. Students explore materials and concepts while considering their roles as artists within broader social and political contexts.
The Department of Art & Visual Culture is part of ARTS@Spelman, which also includes the departments of Theater & Performance, Dance Performance & Choreography, Music, the Digital Moving Image Salon, the Museum of Fine Art and the Spelman College Innovation Lab. The College is planning a new innovation and arts building, which will be an interdisciplinary environment that supports and advances experimentation, collaboration, active play, research and the imaginative use of digital technologies.
