About the position:
NYU KJCC is seeking a Graduate Assistant for Graphic Design, Communications, and Social Media for the 2022-2023 Academic Year.
Reporting to the Associate Director, the Graduate Assistant will be responsible for graphic design (event flyers, digital promotions, and other digital and printed materials), and social media (communications, publicity, media outreach, online support, website maintenance, and general outreach). The GA will oversee and monitor all KJCC outward communications and will work with KJCC administrative secretary on the weekly newsletters. Additionally, the GA will help with event production and student support staff.
The ideal candidate will have experience at the intersection of communication and design and must support and align with KJCC’s mission to to promote research and teaching on Spain and the Spanish-speaking world at the university, and to mount free public programs for a general audience that highlight the history, politics, and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
Knowledge of Spanish and Latin American and Spanish cultures is a plus but not required. Fluency in oral and written Spanish and English is a strong preference.
Specific tasks may include:
Website: regular updates and supervision
Graphic Design for flyers, promotional and administrative materials, and programs
Social media management: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (posts, create events)
Update NYU Calendar
Press releases
Media digital archive (YouTube and website media archive)
Assistance at events when needed
Assistance with Live Stream when needed
General Responsibilities:
- Promote the office’s events and programs through our email newsletter, website, social media, and print materials
- Maintain and update KJCC website
- Compile, create, and post promotional material on the Center’s social media accounts
- Draft and edit communication documents for events and initiatives
- Conduct social media analytics
- Support with weekly and special newsletters and other office communications
- Create and maintain graphic designs used for the Office and/or KJCC’s calendars, digital and print promotions and event flyers, social media content, branding materials, and other marketing and communications materials
- Develop promotional graphics for social media in collaboration with other staff members, including Instagram Stories, Facebook and Twitter posts, etc.
- Work closely with other staff members to support and develop the visual branding of the office, programs, and annual events
- Occasionally assist with university-related functions and events (e.g., Zoom meetings, webinars, and in-person events) to promote KJCC programs and services
- Other duties as assigned, as well as opportunities for increased responsibilities around area(s) of interest
- Attend necessary trainings, weekly staff meetings, and team development sessions, as requested
Minimum Qualifications and Competencies Needed:
- A passion for Spain and the Spanish-speaking world
- Adobe CC Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Lightroom)
- Knowledge and proficiency in designing visuals and content for Facebook, Instagram (Stories, Feed, Reels), and Twitter
- Familiarity with Google platforms (e.g., Docs, Sheets, Slides)
- Color correction and color matching accuity
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills in English (Spanish a plus)
- Ability to write meaningful copy with minimal guidance
- Ability to conceptualize and implement design projects
- Excellent multitasking and time management skills; strong attention to detail
- Comfort and experience working in flexible, changing, and fast-paced work environments
- An openness to giving, receiving, and applying feedback with a positive attitude to improve individual and team performance
- Ability to take initiative and work from a positive and solutions-oriented framework
- Willingness to be part of a team
- Ability to operate with confidentiality
- Must be a currently enrolled full-time graduate student at NYU in the 2022–2023 academic year
- Must be in good academic standing for the term prior to selection and during the entire period of employment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of and proficiency using design software, including Canva, Mailchimp, Adobe After Effects, and/or Adobe Premiere Pro (and other video editing software), etc.
- Experience copyediting for external publications with substantial audience pools
- Experience with web design and updating (CMS training will be provided)
Compensation and Expectations:
- Pay: $28/hour
- Start Date: September 1 (flexible to start August 1, for returning graduate students)
- Schedule: 20-hours/week

Evaluation:
We provide ongoing feedback through 1-on-1 meetings with your direct supervisor, which includes reflection on how the employee is moving towards the goals and priorities that were established together at the start of their work with the office. At the end of each semester, we evaluate how the experience has been, successes, areas for growth, and begin to establish goals for the future.
