JOB: Graduate Assistant, Communications and Design

The Center for Multicultural Education and Programs (CMEP) within the Office of Global Inclusion, Diversity, and Strategic Innovation (OGI) is seeking Graduate Assistants for Communications and Design for the 2024–2025 Academic Year. The positions will report to the Senior Associate Director for Strategic Projects, Communications, and Design. Responsibilities will include overseeing and monitoring outward communications through CMEP’s social media and web channels and creating and maintaining graphic designs for the office’s calendars, digital promotions, event flyers, and other digital and printed marketing materials. Additionally, the Graduate Assistant will be responsible for delegating tasks and projects to Undergraduate Interactive Media and Communications Assistants and Graphic Designers. 

The ideal candidate will have experience at the intersection of communication and design and must support and align with CMEP’s mission to produce high-profile, intentional, and sustained educational initiatives, programs, and interventions focused on global inclusion, diversity, belonging, equity, and access (GIDBEA). 
 

Experience in copyediting, proofreading, social media management and analytics collection, and branding will be prioritized. Candidates must have knowledge of desktop publishing and design software and be proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Google Suite, and Canva. Adobe InDesign, Lightroom, Premiere Pro, and other video editing software knowledge is a plus.

General Responsibilities:

  • Promote the office’s events and programs through our email newsletter, website, social media, and print materials
  • Compile, create, and post educational articles and resources on the office’s social media accounts
  • Draft and edit communication documents for events and initiatives
  • Coordinate across Office of Global Inclusion social media platforms and support as needed
  • Conduct social media analytics
  • Support with weekly and special newsletters and other office communications
  • Create and maintain graphic designs used for the Office and/or Center’s calendars, digital and print promotions and event flyers, social media content, branding materials, and other marketing and communications materials
  • Develop promotional graphics for social media in collaboration with other staff members, including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok posts, etc.
  • Work closely with other staff members to support and develop the visual branding of the office, programs, and annual events (e.g., NYU MLK Week, NYU Portraits, etc.)
  • General office support—greet visitors, answer visitors’ questions, and refer them to appropriate resources
  • General administrative duties (e.g., answering phones, copies, emails)
  • Occasionally assist with university-related functions and events (e.g., Zoom meetings, webinars, and in-person events) to promote office-sponsored programs and services
  • Other duties as assigned, as well as opportunities for increased responsibilities around area(s) of interest
  • Attend necessary trainings, staff meetings, and team development sessions, as requested

Minimum Qualifications and Competencies Needed:

  • A passion for global inclusion, diversity, belonging, equity, and access (GIDBEA) work and has an understanding of the unique needs and concerns of historically marginalized and excluded groups within the NYU community
  • Adobe CC Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Lightroom)
  • Knowledge and proficiency in designing visuals and content for Instagram (Stories, Feed, Reels), TikTok, Facebook, and LinkedIn
  • Familiarity with Google platforms (e.g., Docs, Sheets, Slides)
  • Color correction and color matching acuity
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Ability to write meaningful copy with minimal guidance
  • Ability to conceptualize and implement design projects
  • Experience in an administrative capacity
  • Excellent multitasking and time management skills; strong attention to detail
  • Comfort and experience working in flexible, changing, and fast-paced work environments
  • An openness to giving, receiving, and applying feedback with a positive attitude to improve individual and team performance
  • Ability to take initiative and work from a positive and solutions-oriented framework
  • Willingness to be part of a team
  • Ability to operate with confidentiality
  • Must be a currently enrolled full-time graduate student at NYU in the 2024–2025 academic year
  • Must be in good academic standing for the term prior to selection and during the entire period of employment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and proficiency using design software, including Canva, Mailchimp, Adobe After Effects, and/or Adobe Premiere Pro (and other video editing software), etc.
  • Experience copyediting for external publications with substantial audience pools
  • Experience with web design and updating (CMS training will be provided)

Compensation and Expectations: 

  • Pay: $29/hour
  • Start Date: October 1 (flexible to start earlier)
  • Schedule: 20 hours/week
