[JOB] Editor, the Toolbox App Site

The Toolbox is a website aimed at making it easier to discover ways to improve your world and other’s through technology. Acting as an app
store and news site, The Toolbox will blend compelling stories and smart recommendations focused on the intersection of social change and technology.
POSITION
As the Editor of the Toolbox site you are expected to create a tone. We need a voice and style to our content. You will also manage bloggers and constantly be seeking new content on and offline to tell engaging stories around the intersection of technology and social change.
WHAT WE EXPECT
• Creative content. Developing and disseminating
• Creating campaigns. Linking current events and hot topics in our interest category (tech and social good) and translating it to actionable steps for readers and collections of relevant tools.
• Targeting the audience. Using proactive and visionary thought leadership to creatively apply our interests to our target audience
• Collaborating. with bloggers, interns, consultants, and new outlets.
• Strategic planning. implementing business objectives in regard to public relations and communication
• Brand management. Relaying our branding throughout all of our communications
• Managing teams. responsible for writing and editing press releases, media materials, and statements
• Clear communication skills.
• Social Media. Clear understanding of popular social media tools.
WHO WE EXPECT
• A sharp decision maker. There are 50 interesting ideas on the table, and 10 of them might actually move the needle if executed right. Which 5 of them should we pursue this month?
• Visionary. Where should we be in six months? Two years? What should we build now to help inform our long-term roadmap? What are we missing?
• Great at writing a clear email and leading a tight meeting. We’re a distributed company, which means we do a lot of our work through email, collaborative documents, and conference calls. You have to be able to motivate and guide a team without daily face-to-face interaction.
(It’s fine if you’ve never done it before, though.)
• Metrics-driven. You’re obsessed with optimization, rigorous about measurement, and skeptical about unexplained success.
THETOOLBOX.ORG EDITOR POSITIONSKILLS
• You can write user stories and acceptance criteria, maintain a queue of potential blog posts and bloggers, prioritize tasks, manage bug reports etc.
• Knack for user research.
• Great, approachable, fun writing style. If we have a bunch of amazing bloggers with really distinct voices and styles, can you be the voice of our product?
• Deep understanding of digital-native media businesses. Can you channel the needs of not just editors but business development and audience development people as well?
• Ability to use CMS backends. Comfortable with things like Tumblr, WordPress, etc…
COMMITMENT
This position will start as freelance and will require 10 to 15 hours of your time to start, with the possibility of turning into a full-time position in three months (or less) if the vertical is going well and we feel that you’re the right fit. Please do not apply if you don’t have the desire or capacity to become a full-time employee down the road.
