What You’ll Do

Avenues New York is seeking a creative, curious and adaptive art & design teacher, equally comfortable in both disciplines, in our Upper Division (Grades 9-12). Art and design are an intrinsic part of an integrated curriculum. Our visual art teachers work closely with faculty from the disciplines of science, World Course, and English; our design program features an innovative curriculum centered on purposeful student projects, in a world-class art studio and makerspace. Additionally, this role will work with our Mastery Learning System program to support students with projects of their choice and help mentor students, specifically those working in the art studios and makerspace. The role will involve teaching multiple visual art sections to students, as well as mentoring individual students, and helping to maintain a strong makerspace.

Both art & design at Avenues incorporate the full gamut of physical, digital, fine arts and cutting edge media and techniques in a program that affords students a robust grounding in the creative process.

Broadly, all teachers at Avenues:

  • ensure students achieve key learning outcomes by targeting instruction to address individual student needs
  • collaboratively plan art-based and interdisciplinary units and projects using backwards design frameworks, such as Understanding by Design
  • co-construct with students a classroom environment that establishes high standards, fosters a sense of belonging, and upholds our values of welcome, safety, and respect
  • practice cultural competence in the classroom and workplace
  • inspire trust and confidence among guardians and families through regular, proactive communication
  • contribute to the broader community of our NYC campus and global network
