Postdoctoral Fellow, Interactive Media Arts
Description
NYU Shanghai is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral position in Interactive Media Arts (IMA). We are an interdisciplinary undergraduate program mixing media creation and theory, with a particular concentration in interactive interfaces, objects, and experiences. IMA combines practice-based and scholarly work in order to explore the social and cultural possibilities of emerging media. Our studio curriculum combines the development of software, the manipulation of digital media, the design and fabrication of material objects, and the construction of virtual and physical spaces. Our seminars relate to theoretical study of the history, philosophy, and politics of emerging media. IMA’s faculty comprise an interdisciplinary mix of artists and scholars.
The ideal candidate would be a researcher from any relevant field of the humanities and social sciences or a scholar-practitioner who works at the intersection of art, science, gaming, computation, robotics, media history and theory. We are looking for candidates with expertise in approaches, including but not limited to: materiality of media systems, STS and infrastructure, philosophy of technology, cyberculture, interactive art history and the aesthetics of emerging technologies (e.g., animation, visualization, VR), social media and political issues that touch on the power structure of tech systems, digital ethnography and other new methodologies for the digital age, core values in design and engineering etc.
We offer a fellowship for one year, with the potential to renew the contract for an additional year. Compensation and terms of employment are comparable to U.S. institutions, and include housing subsidies.
Responsibilities:
The fellowship will involve a diverse set of tasks:
- Teaching load is 1/1. The candidate will be asked to teach a foundational course or propose a topical seminar in line with the candidate’s research interests (pending departmental approval).
- Develop educational materials, tutorials and workshops to support the students of IMA.
- Contribute to the program’s research agenda in emerging media.
- Contribute to the intellectual life of the program by participating and organizing events.
Qualifications
Required Education––Ph.D. in a related field. Practice based Ph.Ds are encouraged to apply.
Required Experience–– High quality research, teaching excellency or outstanding practice in the fields of interactive media are required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities––Successful candidates should demonstrate the ability to think critically about or produce contents in areas such as media arts, virtual reality, augmented reality, video games and location based interactive media, for instance.
