The Queens Museum of Art is seeking and Assistant for the New New Yorkers Program. Using art as a catalyst, and in partnership with the Queens Library, the Assistant works part-time in conjunction with the Program Manager to develop a variety of courses and cultural programs for the immigrant community in Queens. New New Yorkers courses are meant to provide arts, technology and English literacy courses for immigrant adults, and the ideal candidate must be comfortable working with different communities and enthusiastic about the Arts and their place in education and daily life.
The ideal candidate must have a strong interest in the arts and cultural exchange, with an additional interest in museum education. He/she must be able to take on moderate-size projects and see them through to completion. Some of these projects will be one-time events like exhibits of student work and cultural festivals, and others will be 8-week courses on and off the Museum. Although not a fast-paced environment, multi-tasking and organization are a must for this job.
Duties include:
- Assist with the design and development of Arts and Literacy courses for adults, in languages other than English.
- Work closely with artists, educators and other museum staff to coordinate said courses.
- Liaison with Hispanic, East Asian and other communities around Queens.
- Work occasionally with other Museum departments to assist or advise in their projects.
- Occasional print and web graphic design duties.
- Must be able to read and write in traditional Mandarin.
- Comfortable with translating museum materials into Mandarin.
- Occasionally work outside of the museum with the Queens Library and community based organizations.
- Must be able to work at least one weekend day.
- Interest in Contemporary Art a must.
- Basic to intermediate knowledge of Adobe CS4 suite a plus.
- Interest in museum education or administration a plus.
This position is part-time temporary. Pay range is $18~20/hour.
