Position Announcement for Executive Director (starting at .5 FTE)
This =
is an exciting opportunity to lead a well-respected, creative organization t=
hat has great potential for expansion and replication. The Executive Directo=
r will work with a strong staff and a volunteer Board to craft a direction t=
owards increased capacity and sustainability. While the office is in Berkele=
y, some telecommuting will be possible.

CRS seeks an Executive Dire=
ctor who will provide visionary leadership to the Board, staff, and voluntee=
rs. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to CRS=92s mission and=
to raising visibility for the organization. S/he will find opportuni=
ties to partner with organizations and individuals in order to achiev=
e CRS=92s goals.. The new Executive Director will expand CRS=92s leadership =
in the science education community through strategic planning, creati=
ng opportunities to maximize resources that will help CRS realize its full p=
otential. S/he will bring the experience and insight to provide focus and di=
rection to CRS=92s strong program base.

Qualifications
=
The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge and experience:
=
=95 Three or more years in a leadership role in a non-profit education orga=
nization or closely related field
=95 Familiarity with elementary scien=
ce content and pedagogy
=95 Demonstrated success developing and impleme=
nting diversified fundraising plans, including foundation and corporate gran=
ts, individual donors, and contracts
=95 Experience developing and impl=
ementing strategic planning, and measuring organizational outcomes
=95 W=
orking knowledge of the context of CRS program delivery: K-5 public elementa=
ry schools, science education organizations, environmental education communi=
ty
=95 Demonstrated experience with non-profit financial management and=
planning
=95 Demonstrated success building strategic partnerships
=
=95 Experience with Board relations and development
=95 Demonstrated c=
ommitment to CRS=92s mission
=95 Ability to provide leadership and dire=
ction to staff, contractors, and consultants

Responsibilities
Leadership: Ensure that the available resources are effective=
ly used to meet the needs of the organization in fulfillment of its mission.=
Work in partnership with the Board of Directors to provide direction for th=
e organization. Serve as the liaison between Board and staff.

P=
lanning:
Provide leadership, vision, oversight, and direction for the ac=
hievement of CRS=92s mission through strategic organizational planning. Over=
see operational planning to ensure the successful implementation of the stra=
tegic plan. Work with planning consultants.

Board relations: Work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure and facilitate the Boar=
d=92s involvement in developing CRS=92s policies and programs. Help mobilize=
new Board talent to meet organizational needs.

Staff leadershi=
p:
Lead and supervise staff and consultants. Provide leadership to help =
staff with professional development. Oversee scheduling and work flow accord=
ing to staff capacity.

Resource development and management:=
Lead and oversee all development efforts that enhance the financial viabili=
ty of CRS. Be an active fundraiser for the organization. Write grants or wor=
k with a grant writer to bring in $200,000 or more in grant income annually.=
Manage the development and implementation of consulting contracts and earne=
d income opportunities.

Program: Ensure that program design=
and decisions are consistent with CRS=92s mission and vision. Provide focus=
and direction to the Teacher Membership and Volunteer (Community in Classro=
om) programs. Evaluate the impact and effectiveness of programs.

Budget, financial and legal oversight: Lead the budgeting process and =
financial management. Work with bookkeeper to maintain accounting in Quickbo=
oks. Ensure that the Board has all the information it needs to make decision=
s. Ensure compliance with legal obligations, insurance policies, and banking=
/credit relationships.

Public relations and outreach: Build=
community awareness and lead outreach efforts to new schools and new source=
s of volunteers. Serve as chief spokesperson representing the organization i=
n the community. Prepare marketing materials and outreach to the media.

Human resources: Ensure that personnel and volunteer management=
is in accordance with legal obligations and policy.

t provides a unique array of science professional development and informatio=
n services to elementary educators in Alameda County. Our mission is to buil=
d a community of educators dedicated to getting young students excited about=
learning through science. A small office in North Berkeley is home base for=
a creative and energetic team providing support services and workshops for =
teachers, a large scientist volunteer program, and resource development cons=
ulting services. With a staff of four (plus contractors and consultants) and=
a budget under $300,000, CRS makes use of technological economies of scale =
through a large database and on-line communications to serve hundreds of loc=
al teachers each year with individualized support.
