The School of Art, Media and Technology at Parsons the New School for School of Design is looking for an Assistant Professor of Communication Design. I’m an Assistant Professor at Parsons in CDT (Communication Design Technology) and I can say AMT – School of Art, Media and Technology is a great place to work! In particular we’re looking for people with Interaction Design and/or Motion Graphics experience. Thought I’d spread the word. Full-time faculty gigs in NYC are pretty rare, but Parsons has been hiring quite a bit lately.

Responsibilities:
Parsons The New School for Design, a division of The New School, seeks applicants for a renewable term faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor of Communication Design, with teaching assignments within undergraduate and graduate programs (including BFA Communication Design, AAS Graphic Design, MFA Design + Technology, and the proposed MS in Visual Communications [Broadcast, Interactive, and Graphic Design]). This appointment will be within the School of Art, Media and Technology at Parsons.

Applicants should demonstrate expertise in the practice, history and theory of Communication Design and related genres, with specific attention paid to the areas of interaction design and/or motion graphics. Candidates must show evidence of innovation in their pedagogical approaches and be forward-thinking about what skills and literacies are now required to adeptly respond to complex of global conditions.

The Assistant Professor of Communication Design will teach undergraduate and graduate studio-based courses within the School of Art, Media, and Technology and students from a variety of disciplines across Parsons. S/he will hold regular office hours, and participate in extracurricular activities on a regular basis (e.g., critiques, review panels, thesis supervision, independent study, Parsons/New School committees, etc.). The Assistant Professor is expected to continue to participate actively and with distinction in professional, creative or scholarly work.

This position is dependent on budget approval from the Office of the Provost.

Minimum Qualifications:

The ideal candidate should have:

– A terminal graduate degree or demonstrated equivalence in Communication Design and/or related genres
– Active/current professional practice or experimental creative/critical scholarship.
– Thorough knowledge of digital media and digital production environments, including both still and time-based media
– An understanding of the implications of design and fine arts practice in relationship to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific and technological forces (an engagement with the contemporary art/design of Asia, Africa, Europe or Latin America and/or African Americans, Latinos, or Native Americans is highly desirable)
– At least one to three years teaching experience at the university level, coupled with a proven track record of working well with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, professional training and aesthetic sensibilities
– Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills
– Good management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, communicate and motivate effectively
